Red, White and Blue Cookie Cups

June 23, 2019 This post may contain affiliate links.

These sugar cookie cups topped with a big swirl of red, white and blue frosting make festive desserts for the 4th of July or any patriotic American holiday. Add some patriotic sprinkles to these Red, White and Blue Cookie Cups to make them even more fun.

If you are looking for a really festive dessert to bring to your 4th of July, Memorial Day, or Labor Day picnic, or perhaps to a Veteran’s Day or Presidents Day event, these Red, White and Blue Cookie Cups are a perfect solution.

Each sugar cookie cup is easy to make by simply baking sugar cookie dough in a muffin tin. I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe to make these cookies. Once baked in the cups, they are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside.

I like to add a splash of almond extract to the cookies to enhance the flavor but you can use peppermint, lemon, or even butter rum extract if you prefer.

Each cookie is then topped with a big swirl of marshmallow frosting.

The frosting is a simple recipe combining marshmallow fluff with a traditional American buttercream. It makes a wonderfully fluffy frosting that has a great flavor.

Plus, the icing is easy to color using gel food coloring. Be sure to use a good quality red food coloring in order to get a vibrant red color, like Americolor Super Red Gel Coloring.

Did you know that icing colors intensify over time? I like to make my frosting a few hours before I’m going to decorate my desserts so that I am sure the color looks just right.

I love the look of the three color swirl, and I LOVE a fluffy frosting!
