Turn a 9 x 13 inch sheet cake into this festive beer mug cake for Father's Day or your dad's birthday. This Beer Mug Cake is so easy to make and decorate and can be personalized for your party.

Cheers to Dad! What better way to celebrate his special day than with a slice of this yellow cake decorated with homemade buttercream frosting? This Beer Mug Cake will make a big impression this Father's Day, yet it is really simple to make.
Start with a made-from-scratch yellow cake that you bake in a 9 X 13 inch sheet pan, then decorate it using golden yellow buttercream and top it off with some white buttercream foam. It's easy to add a modeling chocolate or fondant handle to make the cake look just like a beer mug.
You can even personalize the cake for your father by adding "cheers to dad" lettering made from modeling chocolate or fondant.

RECIPE

- 2 cups cake flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, soft
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 8 large egg yolks at room temperature
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons lemon zest
- ¾ cup buttermilk at room temperature
- 1 ½ cups (3 sticks) butter, softened
- 6 cups (27 ounces) powdered sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon lemon or almond extract
- 6 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- gold and/or yellow food coloring
- 3-4 ounces white fondant or modeling chocolate
- optional 2 ounces black fondant, modeling chocolate, or frosting
-
Preheat oven to 350°F.
-
Line a 9 x 13 inch pan with non-stick tin foil or butter and flour the inside of the pan and line the bottom with a piece of parchment paper.
-
Sift together the flour and baking powder, then set aside.
-
Using an electric mixer, beat butter until smooth and creamy.
-
Add sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
-
Add one egg yolk at a time, mixing for 30 seconds in between each addition.
-
Add salt, vanilla extract, and lemon zest.
-
Add one third of the flour and using low speed, beat until combined.
-
Pour in half of the buttermilk and mix until smooth.
-
Mix in half of the remaining flour, then the remaining buttermilk, then the remaining flour.
-
Pour the batter into the pan and bake on a lower rack in the oven for 34-38 minutes until the center bounces back when lightly pressed with a finger or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
-
Cool cake in pan for 15 minutes, then turn upside down onto a rectangle cake board and allow to cool completely for at least 1 hour.
-
Carve the bottom edge of the cake so that it curves slightly, like a beer mug. Carve the opposite end with several curves (to look like the foam on top of the beer mug).
-
Beat butter until light and fluffy.
-
Add powdered sugar and salt and beat until smooth and creamy.
-
Add vanilla, almond extract and 1 tablespoons heavy whipping cream.
-
Continue to add heavy whipping cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the frosting is a nice spreadable consistency. You may not need all 6 tablespoons.
-
Color 3 cups of the frosting a golden yellow.
-
Spread or pipe the frosting over the cake leaving about a 2 inch boarder at the top.
-
Use the remaining white frosting to spread or pipe the foam onto the top of the cake.
-
Color the white fondant or modeling chocolate using a tiny drop of gold or yellow fondant. You just want it to have a slight gold color.
-
Roll it into a log and shape it into a beer mug handle.
-
Attach to the side of the cake.
-
Optional, decorate cake with “cheers to dad” cut out from fondant or modeling chocolate or piped on with black frosting.
Store your cake at room temperature for up to 3 days. Cover and refrigerate any leftovers.
