Add a touch of whimsy to your Christmas desserts by adding a modeling chocolate Christmas topper to your cookies, cereal treats, brownies, and more.
This post was originally published on December 19, 2011, the first holiday season here at HungryHappenings.
I had so much fun creating all of these modeling chocolate toppers and I really thought they all turned out so cute.
As I was looking through my old holiday posts I realized that you probably have never seen these sweet holiday treats because very few of you were following my blog back then. I thought it would be an excellent time to dust this old post off and share it again.
Each modeling chocolate topper was crafted to fit over an egg-shaped treat. I used the toppers to decorate cookies, Rice Krispie Treats, chocolate lollipops, chocolate-dipped peanut butter fudge, marshmallow & caramel pops, brownies, breakfast pastries, and even chocolate bars.
The goal was that you could mix and match the designs to the treats.
There are 12 designs and 12 treats so that is a lot of combinations.
Modeling Chocolate Christmas Toppers
Before I get to the designs, you might be asking "what is modeling chocolate?"
- Modeling chocolate is a soft and somewhat chewy blend of chocolate and corn syrup.
- Dark modeling chocolate tastes like a Tootsie Roll.
- White modeling chocolate has the same texture but tastes like white chocolate.
- Modeling chocolate firms up as it drys, so it holds it's shape well, but will melt in your mouth when you bite into it, so it's a wonderful addition to any dessert.
- It looks like fondant but tastes like chocolate. You can use fondant to make all these toppers, but I highly recommend you use modeling chocolate instead. I know you'll like the flavor better.
- You can find my simple, 2-ingredient modeling chocolate recipe, here.
I love making modeling chocolate decorations. Modeling chocolate, when made using Candy Melts is called Candy Clay and I wrote a book all about it. Candy Clay Creations is available in print or ebook format.
This 102-page book is filled with tips and tricks for making and working with candy clay along with 17 step-by-step tutorials for decorating cupcakes, cookies, and more using candy clay.
It's a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to make festively decorated treats.
I would never have imagined, before I began this project, that so many Christmas designs could be made by starting with a simple egg shape. I had so many more design ideas but had decided to create 12 days of sweet designs so I stopped at 12.
I did have a few designs that did not make the cut.
Although I thought my attempt at making an angel worked, my husband did not. He just didn't get that the girl, pictured above, was an angel. He thought she looked like she was wearing a headband, not a halo, so she was cut.
My sled dog just didn't look Christmasy enough, so he didn't make the cut either.
These are the twelve designs I settled on.
I love each of these designs and know that the treats topped with them will look so cute on your Christmas platters. They can all be packaged to be sold at Christmas Craft shows, bazaars, and bake sales too.
They are all pretty simple to make but I'm not going to lie, they do take some time and patience.
To make these designs you will need an egg-shaped cookie cutter and some small metal or plastic cutters. You'll find the supply list for each design in each post.
