It's so easy to make these cute Rice Krispie treat bears, bunnies, and badgers using a Wilton's new DIY-Lish Decorating Kit, complete with all the tools you'll need to make fun fondant animals.

If you love making cute desserts like these Rice Krispie treat bears, bunnies, and badgers, but you don't always have the right tools or ingredients on hand, you are going to love the new DIY-Lish Decorating Kits from Wilton.
Each decorating kit has all the tools you will need to make the most adorable decorations for your cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and Rice Krispie treats.
I was so excited when Wilton asked me to share this new product with you because I know many of you like to create fun food but don't have all the specialized tools that I use to create all of my projects.
I realize that having a kitchen filled with every cookie cutter under the sun and just about every other imaginable cake, cookie, cupcake, and candy decorating tool is not normal.
My kitchen is loaded with more tools than most people would need in their lifetime but that's because I've created over 1,030 fun food projects to share with you here and have used a plethora of tools to make those creations.
But if you are just looking to make something simple and super cute, you are going to love these new DIY-Lish Kits.
There are four different kits, including the Cute Critters Decorating Kit that I used to make the sweet bear, bunny, and badger fondant decorations for my cereal treats.
The other kits will help you to easily decorate Mermaid Cupcakes and Lollipop Candy Cupcakes. There's even a Gummy Candy Decorating Kit that comes with gummy candy mix, coloring, sprinkles, and a gummy mold.
I love that each kit comes with a project card that has step-by-step images and instructions on how to decorate your treats.
You simply follow the directions to make your cute desserts.
The Cute Critters Decorating Kit comes complete with:
- 3 ounces black fondant
- 3 ounces of white fondant
- 3 ounces brown fondant
- 0.5 ounces black sugar pearls (candies)
- 2-inch round cutter
- 1 ½-inch teardrop cutter
- 6-inch fondant roller
- Step-by-step project card
You will need a few other items:
- Homemade Rice Krispie treats or other dessert
- I have found, after having 20 people taste test over 20 versions of a traditional marshmallow cereal treat, the absolute BEST Rice Krispie treats recipe that I have shared on my new website HowToMakeCerealTreats.com.
- If you prefer, you can make Chocolate Rice Krispie treats or even Peanut Butter Rice Krispie treats.
- You can also put these fondant animal toppers on brownies, cookies or cupcakes.
- A silicone mat
- If you love working with fondant or modeling chocolate, I highly recommend investing in a smooth silicone mat. Nothing sticks to them!!!!
- You can roll the fondant out on the mat without having to dust it with corn starch or powdered sugar so your fondant will be nice and clean.
- I use Wilton's Silicone Baking Mats and love that they have a nice smooth surface and are easy to clean.
- If you don't have a silicone mat, you will need to lightly dust a countertop or cutting board with cornstarch or powdered sugar before rolling out your fondant.
- Candy Melts or frosting
- I highly recommend using Candy Melts to attach your fondant toppers to your treats.
- You could use frosting, which will work fine to attach the toppers, but the ears will hold in place much better if you use Candy Melts.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treat Bears
- Unwrap the fondant and knead until pliable.
- Keep your fondant covered in plastic wrap or in a zip-top bag when you are not working with it so that it doesn't dry out.
- Roll out some black fondant to 1/16 inch thickness.
- Cut out one 2-inch circle and two black teardrops for each bear.
- Cut across the two teardrops forming two ears.
- Combine about ⅓ of the white fondant with a small amount (in a 6 to 1 ratio) of the brown fondant and knead together to create tan-colored fondant.
- Roll out the tan fondant and cut out 3 teardrops for each bear, then cut two of those teardrops using the cutter to make them a bit smaller in diameter.
- Then cut across making the insides of the ears.
How to Assemble the Fondant Bear
- Use a tiny bit of water to attach one tan teardrop along one edge of the black fondant circle and to attach the two pieces of each ear together.
- You can use a pastry brush, your finger, or one of Wilton's Water Brushes to brush a thin layer of water onto the fondant pieces.
- Pinch off a tiny bit of black fondant roll it into an oval and attach it near the bottom edge of the tan teardrop to create the nose.
- Use a toothpick or skewer to create indentations in the nose for the nostrils.
- Push two black sugar pearls into the circle of black fondant, on either side of the tan teardrop, just slightly below the top tip, to create the bear's eyes.
- Use the 2-inch cutter to cut out rice krispie treats, brownies, or cookies.
- Melt some white candy melts and brush a thin layer over your rice krispie treat, brownie, or cookie.
- If using a cupcake you can skip this step.
- Attach the ears to the cereal treat, brownie, or cookie using candy melts.
- If attaching the fondant topper to a cupcake simply push the ears into the frosting to adhere.
Bunny and Badger Designs
To make the bunny and badger follow the instructions on the project card.
I love the design of the bear and the badger (which could easily be turned into a panda bear using the same tools), but I think the bunny looks more like a fox or even a hedgehog.
I would probably just skip the layered look on the bunny's face and simply make brown bunnies.
There was enough of each color fondant to make 4 black bears, 3 bunnies, and 3 badgers. If you make plain brown bunnies and use less tan fondant then you should be able to get 4 of each animal out of the fondant in the kit.
The few simple tools that are in this DIY-Lish Cute Critters Decorating Kit can be used to make so many cute animals. You can make brown bears, polar bears, hedgehogs, foxes, panda bears, and even fish (use one circle for the body, tear drops for fins and tail).
Rice Krispie Treat Bears, Bunnies, and Badgers Video
Marshmallow cereal treats cut into circles are topped with cute fondant bears, bunnies, and badgers.
- 6 tablespoons European-Style salted butter
- 16 ounces Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
- 7 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispie Cereal
- 1 Wilton DIY-Lish Cute Critters Decorating Kit
- 2 ounces white candy melts, melted
-
Melt butter and marshmallows in a large saucepan set over low heat then stir in the cereal until evenly coated.
-
Gently spread into an even layer in a well buttered 9 x 13 inch pan.
-
Allow to cool for at least one hour.
-
Cut 12 circles out of the treats using the 2-inch round cutter from the DIY-Lish Decorating Kit.
-
Knead then roll out the fondant to about 1/16 of an inch thickness. Mix together, in a 1 to 6 ratio, a small amount of white and brown fondant to create tan fondant.
-
For each bear cut out 1 black circle, 2 black teardrops, and 3 tan teardrops.
Attach one tan teardrop to the black circle using water and attach the other tan teardrops to the black teardrops, cutting off the tips, creating the ears.
Press two black candies on either side of the tan teardrop creating the eyes.
Roll a tiny piece of black fondant into an oval and attach, using water, along the bottom edge of the tan teardrop creating the nose.
Use a toothpick to create two nostrils.
-
Brush a thin layer of melted candy melts on the top of a rice krispie treat and attach a fondant bear face on top.
-
Brush a small amount of candy melts onto the edge of one of the ears and press it onto the rice krispie treat along the top edge of the bears head. Repeat with the other ear.
-
Create more fondant animals using the instructions found in the DIY-Lish Cute Critters Decorating Kit and attach them to the remaining rice krispie treats.
