How to turn a Twinkie into Beaker for a Muppets themed party.

July 30, 2012 This post may contain affiliate links.

Do your kids love the Muppets? Try creating this adorable Twinkie Beaker and see your kids light up with joy! It’s simple and easy, and incredibly delicious!

Since I started creating themed cuisine for this blog, I haven’t crafted a single food item into a cartoon or movie character. Not that I haven’t wanted to, I just wasn’t sure if I was allowed. Honestly, I’m still not sure, but I just couldn’t resist sharing this project.

Recently I’ve been having a great time turning snack cakes into edible crafts. I had several boxes of snack cakes sitting on my kitchen counter and every time I walked by them I would hear this strange sound, “Meep, Meep.” Beaker was just dying to explode from the box of Twinkies.

I’ve not been sponsored or paid to create this craft, but would really get a kick out of seeing my Beaker Twinkie on the Hostess box. Doesn’t he look great there?

Beaker Twinkies

You’ll need:

Hostess Twinkies (or similar snack cake)
modeling chocolate (see recipe here)
food coloring – orange, red, black
black edible ink marker
powdered sugar for dusting cutting board
rolling pin
knife
clay extruder (or a very clean garlic press)
white frosting or melted white chocolate

Instructions:

Make one batch of white modeling chocolate using the recipe, here. Pinch off pieces of white and roll them into balls for the eyes. Use a black food coloring marker to dab a dot in the center of each eye for the pupil.

Sprinkle some powdered sugar on a cutting board. Roll out some white modeling chocolate quite thin. Cut it into 1″ x 5″-6″ strips to form the shirt.

Color some modeling chocolate orange. Pinch off about a tablespoon size ball, roll it into a log, insert it into a clay extruder fitted with a multi hole insert. Then insert the plunger and press out the orange clay into long strands for Beaker’s hair. You can achieve a similar result using a garlic press. Separate the strands of orange clay and cut into varying lengths between about 1/4″ and 3/4″. Pinch a bunch of pieces together to form Beaker’s Hair.

Color some modeling chocolate red and black. Roll both out on a powdered sugar dusted cutting board. Use the edible marker to draw a mouth on the red and cut out around it. Cut out ties from the black.

To assemble. Unwrap your Twinkies. Use white frosting or melted white chocolate to adhere the modeling chocolate to your Twinkies. Place two eyes near the top of a Twinkie. Adhere a mouth a bit below that. Place the nose in between, overlapping the mouth. Cut a hole in the top of the Twinkie. Fill with frosting or chocolate, Stick the hair down into the hole; add more hair if needed to fill Beaker’s head. Spread some frosting on the back of the white shirt piece. Wrap it around the bottom of the Twinkie, allowing it to cover the bottom of the snack cake completely. Leave it open so the snack cake shows through. I wrapped one completely around the bottom of the Twinkie and it didn’t look good.

Make sure to keep these stored in an airtight container or the Twinkie will dry out. Serve at your Muppet themed party or just for fun.

Oh, golly, that's a winner! Everybody loves Beaker. You could easily make this a series: Miss Piggy is a Snowball, Rowf is a Devil Dog, Red Zinger for Animal, etc., etc.

Hi Beth! I adore this! It definitely belongs on the Twinkie box, though with Disney's nutritional guidelines I'm not sure they'd allow it :(. Make a healthier version and pitch it to them! I made Swedish Chef pops little while back as part of a marketing campaign to promote the Muppets movie. There's a video of the Swedish Chef making them (with my help) here: http://www.dashrecipes.com/recipes/dr/s/swedish-chef-pops.html

Hi Beth! These are absolutely adorable, and I think they definitely should be on a Twinkie box. Disney does have strict nutritional guidelines, though.. so I'm not sure if they'd allow it! That said…I do see cake pops and cupcakes on there site. I made Swedish Chef pops earlier this year as part of an advertorial/marketing campaign for the Muppets movie (http://www.dashrecipes.com/recipes/dr/s/swedish-chef-pops.html). Seeing your post brought back those fun memories! Recreating characters is so much fun, but you're right in that it can be a bit tricky with copyright issues. Even after working with the Muppets, I'm still not clear on what I can and can't do should I blog personally!

Hi Shannon, I remember seeing the Swedish Chef Pops and the video a while back and thinking what fun that must have been to do. I think the video and the pops are so cute. I have been so hesitant to put any characters on my site. I know bakeries can't sell anything without a license, but I'm not selling these Beaker Twinkies, I'm just showing people how they can make them in their home kitchens. I do wish I knew what the rules really are regarding this issue. So many bloggers are creating really amazing projects featuring characters, and I'd sure like to make more. I really appreciate your input.

If there was ever a muppet born for the internet, it's Beaker. LOVE these, saw his hapless face on Tastespotting and just had to come by and comment – took me right back to childhood 🙂
