Twinkie Snack Cakes Puppies

Published: Jul 15, 2013 · Recipe by: Beth · This post may contain affiliate links.

Make these Twinkie Snack Cakes Puppies for or with your kids and have an hour or so of fun! They can be decorated to look just like your own puppy.

Twinkie Snack Cakes Puppies

These sweet little guys were found snuggled in a box at my local store. They had just arrived and where exactly were I expected to find them.

I love their light golden color offset by their deep chocolate brown spots.

Their parents are Twinkies and Tootsie Rolls, and together they created really adorable offspring.

They have made a great addition to my pack.

You see, I already had some bumble bees, bunnies, and even a Beaker. We’re now one big happy family.

Speaking of family, did you hear that Hostess is now a part of the Apollo Global Management and Metropoulous & Co family, and that their snack cakes are now back on store shelves?

I hope they can make it work and stay together for a long time, so I can keep adding to these family portraits.

Twinkie and Tootsie, Snack Cake Puppies

You’ll Need:

Twinkies
Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry Tootsie Roll Midgees
kitchen shears or knife
optional: two sizes of small round cutters, small teardrop cutter
black food coloring marker
toothpick
chocolate frosting or melted chocolate

Instructions:

  • Unwrap Twinkies and Tootsie Rolls.
  • Soften candies in the microwave or in your hands and flatten to about 1/16th inch thickness.
  • Use kitchen shears, knife, or metal cutters to cut the following pieces for each Twinkie dog:
    • 2 white (vanilla) eyes (I used a large round plunger cutter)
    • 2 brown (chocolate) pupils (small round plunger cutter)
    • 1 pink (strawberry) tongue (teardrop cutter)
    • 1 brown nose and mouth (kitchen shears)
    • 2 brown ears (cut with kitchen shears then shape into a curved ear)
    • 2-6 brown spots (kitchen shears)
  • Draw a line down the center of the pink tongue.
  • Poke a hole on either side of the Twinkie, about 1/2 inch from the top.
  • Fill the hole with chocolate frosting.
  • Stick the pointed end of an ear in each hole.
  • Use small dabs of chocolate frosting to attach all the facial features to your Twinkies putting the spots in a variety of places to give each puppy character.

You will have to be very careful when moving your puppies, as their ears are very floppy.

I suggest you assemble them on the platter or plate you will use for serving.

If you pick them up, be sure to support the ears.

These can be stored for a day in an airtight container. The cakes will dry out if left out for too long.

Make these Twinkie Snack Cakes Puppies for or with your kids and have an hour or so of fun! They can be decorated to look just like your own puppy.
