Turn a Twinkie snack cake into Beaker for your Muppets party. Meep! This cute little cake has big expressive eyes, a bulbous orange nose, a white lab coat and tie, and crazy orange hair.
Since I started creating fun edible crafts for this blog, I haven't crafted a single food item into a cartoon or movie character. Not that I haven't wanted to, I just wasn't sure if I was allowed. Honestly, I'm still not sure, but I just couldn't resist sharing this project.
Recently I've been having a great time turning snack cakes into edible crafts. I had several boxes of snack cakes sitting on my kitchen counter and every time I walked by them I would hear this strange sound, "Meep, Meep." Beaker was just dying to explode from the box of Twinkies.
I've not been sponsored or paid to create this craft, but would really get a kick out of seeing my Beaker Twinkie on the Hostess box.
He looks like he belongs on that box!
Update: Since writing this post and creating this Muppets cake, I have shared many T.V. character and movie-themed recipes. including Mickey Mouse Snack Cakes, a Minion Cake, Olaf Pretzels, and more.
Beaker Twinkies
Ingredients
Hostess Twinkies (or similar snack cake)
modeling chocolate
food coloring - orange, red, black
black edible ink marker
powdered sugar for dusting a cutting board
white frosting or melted white chocolate
Supplies
rolling pin
knife
clay extruder (or a very clean garlic press)
cutting board or silicone fondant mat
Instructions
Make modeling chocolate.
Make one batch of white modeling chocolate using the recipe on my How To Make Modeling Chocolate recipe post.
Learn How To Color Modeling Chocolate too before beginning. You'll need orange, red, and black modeling chocolate to decorate your Beaker Twinkie.
Eyes
Pinch off pieces of white and roll them into balls for the eyes.
Use a black food coloring marker to dab a dot in the center of each eye for the pupil.
Lab Coat
Sprinkle some powdered sugar on a cutting board. Roll out some white modeling chocolate quite thin. Cut it into 1" x 5"-6" strips to form the shirt.
Note: You can also roll modeling chocolate out on a silicone fondant mat and not need to use any powdered sugar.
Orange Hair
Color some modeling chocolate orange. Pinch off about a tablespoon-sized ball, roll it into a log, and insert it into a clay extruder fitted with a multi-hole insert. Then insert the plunger and press out the orange clay into long strands for Beaker's hair.
You can achieve a similar result using a garlic press.
Separate the strands of orange clay and cut into varying lengths between about ยผ" and ยพ". Pinch a bunch of pieces together to form Beaker's Hair.
Color some modeling chocolate red and black.
Mouth
Roll both out on a powdered sugar-dusted cutting board or a silicone mat. Use the edible marker to draw a mouth on the red and cut out around it.
Ties
Cut out ties from the black.
Assembling the cake.
Unwrap your Twinkies. Use white frosting or melted white chocolate to adhere the modeling chocolate to your Twinkies.
Place two eyes near the top of a Twinkie.
Adhere a mouth a bit below that. Place the nose in between, overlapping the mouth.
Cut a hole in the top of the Twinkie. Fill with frosting or chocolate, Stick the hair down into the hole; add more hair if needed to fill Beaker's head.
Spread some frosting on the back of the white shirt piece. Wrap it around the bottom of the Twinkie, allowing it to cover the bottom of the snack cake completely. Leave it open so the snack cake shows through. I wrapped one completely around the bottom of the Twinkie and it didn't look good.
Storage
Make sure to keep these stored in an airtight container or the Twinkie will dry out. Serve at your Muppet-themed party or just for fun.
