Fluffy frosting bunnies burrowing down into silicone flower pots filled with chocolate glazed chocolate cupcakes couldn't be sweeter. These Bunny Butt Cupcakes will be so fun to serve for Easter dessert, a baby shower, or an Earth Day celebration.
How cute are these Bunny Butt Cupcakes?
Each little fluffy frosting bunny is burrowing down into a flower pot. When you look at these fun springtime desserts all you see is the furry bottom, fuzzy tail, and big floppy feat of the bunny atop chocolate dirt in a terra cotta pot. Hiding inside is a decadent, made-from-scratch, chocolate cupcake filled and topped with chocolate ganache.
I'd be jumping headfirst into those flower pots too. Wouldn't you???

Each spring for the past several years we have had a family of baby bunnies born in our backyard. The mama rabbit usually creates her hutch in my strawberry patch so when I go to pick the first berries of spring, I am greeted by the sweetest little fur babies. They were the inspiration for these Bunny Butt Cupcakes.
You know I have a thing for making cute Bunny Butt treats for Easter. I’ve already made Oreo Bunny Butts , Pretzel Bunny Butts, and a Chocolate Cheese Ball Bunny Butt and more.
A few years ago I created Ravenous Rabbit Cupcakes (bunny butt cupcakes) with modeling chocolate bunny butts. Those cupcakes were amazing, but they took a long time to decorate being each rabbit was surrounded by lots of modeling chocolate carrots.
When I set out to make these new Bunny Butt Cupcakes I wanted to simplify things so I quickly created my bunny butts using frosting that I chilled in the refrigerator until it was firm enough to hold its shape.
Instructions
Bake Cupcakes in Silicone Terra Cotta Pots
- To create these cute Easter desserts, you’ll want to start by baking chocolate cupcakes in silicone terra cotta pots.
- I've shared a recipe below for decadent homemade chocolate cupcakes but you can use a cake mix to save time if you prefer.
- Then fill and top each chocolate cupcake with homemade chocolate ganache and some cake crumbs.
Decorate your Bunny Butts
- Chill some white frosting in the refrigerator until it is firm enough to hold its shape.
- Scoop the frosting out using an ice cream scoop then place it on a cupcake.
- Then scoop out a small amount of frosting and roll it into a ball for the tail.
- Add two candy feet (see below).
For the feet, you can either buy Wilton’s Candy Bunny Feet at the store (Michael's, JoAnn's, Kroger, Walmart) or from Amazon or you can make your own. Click on the links below to see how to make them using:
- candy melts bunny feet
- modeling chocolate (candy clay) bunny feet
- Reese's Peanut Butter Egg Bunny Feet
- marshmallow bunny feet
You can find the supplies needed to make these Bunny Butt Cupcakes on Amazon (commission earned for sales). If you use plastic flower pots instead of silicone pots, bake the cupcakes in a cupcake pan with a liner, then set the cupcake on the plastic post.

NOTES for making Bunny Butt Cupcakes:
- The cupcake recipe will fill one set of 12 silicone terra cotta pot baking cups. Pour the remaining batter into 4 cupcake liners. You'll crumble one of those cupcakes to make "dirt" for the terra cotta pot cupcakes and have three that you can snack on. If you purchase two sets of silicone baking cups then you can make 16 pots and use one of them to make "dirt."
- Instead of using cake crumbs for the dirt, you can use crushed Oreo Cookies.
- Use Wilton's Candy Bunny Feet or make your own using candy melts, marshmallows, or modeling chocolate.
- Be sure to chill your frosting in the refrigerator until firm enough to hold its shape.

These are so adorable! How long ahead can I make these? Wanted to make the night before?
Beth
You can make them the day before. Just keep them covered at room temperature and they will be fine. You can make the cupcakes several weeks ahead, and keep them in the freezer. If you do that be sure to thaw them on your counter for about an hour before frosting and decorating. Have fun!

hi, i’m looking for a dessert to make for my son’s class for easter and wanted to try these! they’re so cute!!
what kind of frosting did you use? is it okay to use a tub from the grocery store? i read that the frosting needs to be chilled first.. will it melt and lose its shape if i don’t serve it right away? TIA!!
Beth
Hi Tina,
Refrigerating the frosting helps you get a nice rounded scoop of the frosting but if the frosting is too thin eventually it will flatten out. You might be able to use a tub of frosting as long as it isn't too thin. I'd try a whipped frosting as they tend to be a bit lighter and fluffier. Scoop out a large spoonful onto a plate and let it sit for about 15 minutes. If it doesn't flatten out then it will work. If it does, then you can beat in some powdered sugar to make it thicker. I've done that before with store-bought frosting and it has worked.
When I made these I used a large tub of Wilton's Decorator Preferred Icing. I loved that frosting. Unfortunately, they had to change the formula to remove partially hydrogenated oil from it and the new frosting does not have a good flavor, in my opinion.
Have fun making these cupcakes. I hope the kids love them!
tina
thank you!! will i need to “glue” the feet to the bum or will the frosting be sticky enough to hold them together? how long should i chill the frosting for? thanks again for your help!
Beth
The frosting should be sticky enough to hold the feet in place. You can chill the frosting for an hour or two until it's firm enough to easily pop out of your ice cream scoop. You can also just leave it in the fridge overnight if that is easier.
Lynda
Your recipe says 1 cup 7 ounces sugar. Does that mean 1 cup plus 7 ounces? Same with the oil, water, cocoa and sour cream
Beth
Hi Lynda,
Sorry about that. All of the ounces should be in parenthesis. When I changed my recipe cards, the parenthesis were unfortunately removed. I've gone in and added them to this recipe. You might want to reprint the recipe card.
Lynda
Thank you. I’ll be making these today
JoAnn
If I was going to put these together right before I serve them,... do you think I could substitute vanilla ice cream for the frosting ? then attach the tail and feet... ? My concern is it is to much frosting and would be to sweet..
Beth
Yes, JoAnn, you can definitely use ice cream. Check out my Bunny Butt Ice Cream Cones tutorial to see how I decorated something similar using ice cream. https://hungryhappenings.com/bunny-butt-ice-cream-cones/
Jeanne
The recipe instructs you to add vanilla, but I don't see the measurement in the ingredients? How much?
Beth
Oh, I'm so sorry. I just fixed the recipe to read 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract.

I never get tired of those cute little bunny butts!

I'm so glad, because I can't stop creating bunny butt desserts!
