Celebrate the summer by serving a Beach Ball Pie. This colorful pie is fun to make for a pool party or any beach-themed event.
Summer is just about over, but I have a feeling it will be warm enough in Ohio to swim in an outdoor pool well into autumn. We attended a pool party recently and the kids still spent hours splashing around and having a ball.
I brought this beach ball pie along with some Chicken Nugget Starfish and Starfish S'mores. They were all big hits with the party guests.
Last summer I brought my Beach Ball Fruit Pizza to the pool party and my friends were blown away. So, this summer I decided to revisit that beach ball theme and I decorated a pie using brightly colored whipped topping.
Upon my husband's request, I baked a key lime pie to use for this year's beach ball pie project. This post isn't about making the actual pie, but rather the decorating of it. You can use any single-crust pie or tart that you like. If you are like me and are not a fan of key lime pie, then make a peanut butter pie, a no-bake cheesecake, or even a chocolate tart.
Beach Ball Decorated Pie
Ingredients
a single-crust pie or tart - I used a key lime pie but any pie will do.
1 - 8 ounce tub frozen whipped topping, thawed - Store-bought whipped topping holds up well for many hours. I suggest using it instead of freshly whipped cream.
food coloring, neon and regular
Supplies
small bowls
disposable pastry bags or zip-top bags
knife or toothpick
offset spatula or spoon
Instructions
Color whipped topping.
Add food coloring to small amounts of whipped topping to create these six colors, neon pink, neon purple, neon blue, neon green, yellow, and orange (mix yellow and red), or create any colors you like.
You will need larger amounts of some of the colors than others based on the design of the beach ball. Be sure to decide where you will pipe your colors before you divide your whipped topping so you can make more of some colors and less of others.
Also, be sure to leave some whipped topping white for the white panel on the beach ball.
Fill disposable pastry bags or zip-top bags with your colored whipped topping.
Pipe the colored whipped cream on the pie.
I found a beach ball coloring page online and used it as a template to create my beach ball pie. You may not need one if you have better drawing skills than I do.
If you do need one as I did, print out the beach ball coloring page large enough to cover your pie. Cut out around the ball then cut out every other stripe, leaving them attached by the circle in the center.
Set the template over your pie, resting it on the pie crust (you don't want it to stick to your pie, so don't press it down.
Use a knife or toothpick to mark the pie all along the edges of your cut-out. Remove the paper cut out.
Snip the end off of each pastry bag and pipe the colored whipped topping inside the lines, then fill in the area. Use a small spatula or spoon to smooth out the whipped topping.
Once you've piped on all seven colors of whipped topping, you can serve your pie or refrigerate it until needed.

Ive used food coloring on cool whip and it stained the guests mouths... ideas?

I've seen that happen with colored frosting before too. I suppose it could have to do with the type of coloring your using, but I'm really not sure. I didn't have any issues with the liquid food coloring.

Can it be made the night before and then refrigerated? Or will the colors run together?
Beth
It will taste the best if made and decorated the day it is served. Some of the fruit, like the raspberries, will bleed onto the cream cheese filling if stored overnight in the fridge.
