Decorate Pie To Look Like A Beach Ball

Summer is just about over, but I have a feeling it will be warm enough in Ohio to swim in an outdoor pool well into autumn. We attended a pool party recently and although it was 103 degrees Fahrenheit outside and the pool water was 90 degrees, the kids still spent hours splashing around and having a ball. Speaking of ball, I brought along this beach ball pie which was completely devoured by kids and adults alike.

Last summer I brought my Beach Ball Fruit Pizza to the pool party, and it was a huge hit. I posted the tutorial for the pizza here and it has become one of my most popular posts. So, this summer I decided to revisit that beach ball edible craft theme and I decorated a pie using brightly colored whipped topping.

Upon my husband’s request I baked a key lime pie to use for this year’s beach ball pie project. This post isn’t about making the actual pie, but rather the decorating of it. You can use any single crust pie or tart that you like. If you are like me and are not a fan of key lime pie, then make a peanut butter pie, a no-bake cheesecake or even a chocolate tart.

To create this pie, you will need to color some store bought whipped topping and pipe it onto your pie. I wanted to be sure my beach ball strips had just the right shape so instead of free hand drawing them I cheated and printed a beach ball coloring page, cut it out, and used it as a guide. It made creating this pie quick and simple. So use my cheat and do the same, unless you are up to the challenge of free hand drawing the beach ball yourself. No matter how you make it, I’m sure your pool party guests will think it’s great fun.

Beach Ball Decorated Pie

You’ll need:

a single crust pie or tart
1 – 8 ounce tub frozen whipped topping, thawed*
food coloring, neon and regular
small bowls
disposable pastry bags or zip top bags
knife or toothpick
offset spatula or spoonoptional: beach ball coloring page (find it here)

*Store bought whipped topping holds up well. I have used fresh whipped cream to decorate desserts like this before, but always use Whip It to stabilize the whipped cream so it wont weep.

Instructions:

Add food coloring to small amounts of whipped topping to create these six colors, neon pink, neon purple, neon blue, neon green, yellow, and orange (mix yellow and red) or create any colors you like. You will need larger amounts of some of the colors, so be sure to decided where you will pipe your colors before you divide your whipped topping and be sure to leave some whipped topping white.  Fill disposable pastry bags or zip top bags with your colored whipped topping.

If using, print out a beach ball coloring page large enough to cover your pie. Cut out around the ball then cut out every other stripe, leaving them attached by the circle in the center. Set it over your pie, resting it on the pie crust (you don’t want it to stick to your pie, so don’t press it down. Use a knife or toothpick to mark the pie all along the edges of your cut out. Remove the paper cut out.

Snip the end off of each pastry bag and pipe the colored whipped topping inside the lines, then fill in the area. Use a small spatula or spoon to smooth out the whipped topping.

Once you’ve piped on all seven colors of whipped topping,  you can serve your pie or refrigerate it until needed. It will keep in the refrigerator for several days.

I've seen that happen with colored frosting before too. I suppose it could have to do with the type of coloring your using, but I'm really not sure. I didn't have any issues with the liquid food coloring.

Can it be made the night before and then refrigerated? Or will the colors run together?

It will taste the best if made and decorated the day it is served. Some of the fruit, like the raspberries, will bleed onto the cream cheese filling if stored overnight in the fridge.
