Looking for a sweet treat to make for the birthday girl/boy? Try making these sweet Birthday Candle Cookies! Each large cookie is decorated with frosting and Sixlets chocolate candies. They are yummy and festive.

birthday candle cookies decorated with blue and white stripes and a yellow flame made from Sixlets chocolate candies.

If you are looking for some festive cookies to serve at a birthday party, I've got you covered. These birthday candy cookies are easy to make and decorate and taste great!

I made these cookies along with some Sugar Cone Part Horns, Rice Krispie Treat Balloons, and a Birthday Cake Cheese Ball for a party I hosted recently. They were a huge hit.

Who wouldn't love a cookie topped with frosting and chocolate Sixlets?

    So, let's get baking.

    Ingredients

Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix - I used a packaged sugar cookie mix to make this recipe easier. You can find my delicious sugar cookie recipe on my Snowman Cookies recipe if you prefer to make them from scratch.
all-purpose flour - Adding a little more flour gives the cookie dough more structure so it won't spread too much.
    unsalted butter
    egg
a tub of vanilla frosting - You can also make homemade frosting. See my Panda Cake Recipe to grab a delicious homemade frosting recipe.
Sixlets candies - You'll need yellow Sixlets for the flame and you can use any other colors for the candles.

    Supplies

    parchment paper
    rolling pin
    pizza wheel and/or knife
    baking sheets
    spatula or spoon

blue and white striped birthday candle cookies decorated with rows of Sixlets.

    Instructions

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a mixing bowl, combine cookie mix, flour, butter, and egg.  Stir to combine.

rolling out cookie dough between two sheets of parchment paper and a candle shaped cookie dough on parchment paper.

Roll out dough and cut out candles.

    • If making four candles, divide the dough into 4 pieces of varying sizes.
    • Roll one piece of dough into a long log.
    • Set the log on a sheet of parchment paper.
    • Set another piece of parchment paper on top of the dough and use a rolling pin to roll it into a long rectangle.
    • Use a pizza wheel or knife to cut a 3" wide rectangle.* Remove excess dough and roll into a ball.
    • Flatten and shape into a flame.
    • Press the flame into the top of the rectangle.

    Tips

I made each of my four candles a different height (about 10", 12", 14", and 16"), but you can make them as wide or tall as you'd like.

Nine Sixlets fit perfectly in a diagonal line going across a 3" wide candle.

If you make your candles a different width, I suggest you see how the Sixlets will fit by lining them up and measuring the distance. You don't want to have a lot of cookie/frosting showing on either side of the candies.

candle-shaped cookie dough raw and baked, cutting the edges so they are straight, and four baked candy cookies on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Bake the cookies and trim the edges if needed.

    • Pick up the parchment paper and set your candle cookie on a baking sheet. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, create the remaining candle cookies.
    • Bake each cookie for 8-15 minutes depending on the size of the candle. I just set my timer for 8 minutes, then kept an eye on them and pulled them out when they turned golden brown. Each cookie took a different amount of time to bake. If you make smaller cookies, check on them sooner.
    • Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for about 2 minutes.
    • Trim the edges so your candles are straight. The cookie will have spread slightly during baking, and you'll want nice straight edges on the candles, so use a sharp knife to straighten the edges of your candles. It's best to do this before the cookie cools completely as the cookie is a bit soft and will be easier to cut.
    • I measured 3" width and cut off any excess. I also re-shaped the flames to give them a nice curve at the top.
frosting a candle cookie then decorating it with blue, white, and yellow Sixlets

Decorate the cookies with frosting and Sixlets.

    • Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting. Once cooled, spread an even layer of frosting over the cookie.
    • Press one purple Sixlet into the frosting in the left-hand bottom corner of the cookie.
    • Press more purple Sixlets into the frosting angling upwards in a diagonal line across the cookie.
    • Place another row of purple Sixlets above the first row.
    • Press two rows of white Sixlets above and below the rows of purple Sixlets.
    • Continue up the cookie by adding two rows of purple, then two rows of white, until you come to the top of the rectangle.
    • Then press yellow Sixlets into the frosting completely covering the flame. Repeat with remaining cookies.

These cookies are big! One of the tall cookies almost completely filled up my baking tray.

To serve, set the cookies on a large serving platter, cutting board, or a large piece of colored foam core board.

I used a piece of black foam core board because I thought the colors of the candles really looked vibrant against the dark background.

    Storage

Cover the cookies with plastic wrap until ready to serve. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container for up to a week.

    Notes

The Sixlets will soften slightly as they sit on top of the frosting, so making this a day ahead of your party works great.

I made it a few hours before the party and the Sixlets were still very crunchy.  I liked it a bit better the next day, once the candies had softened up a bit.

To serve, cut the cookie in between the rows of Sixlets.

    Ingredients
    • 1 pouch (17.5 oz) Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix OR two (8.5 oz.) pouches
    • ¼ cup all purpose flour
    • ⅓ cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tub vanilla frosting (16 ounces)
    • 336 purple Sixlets
    • 336 white Sixlets
    • 160 yellow Sixlets
    Instructions
    1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
    2. In a mixing bowl, combine cookie mix, flour, butter, and egg.  Stir to combine.
    3. Divide the dough into 4 varying sizes.
    4. Roll out one piece of dough in between two layers of parchment paper creating a long log.
    5. Then cut out a 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch or 16-inch long by 3-inch wide candle.
    6. Roll a ball of dough into a curved teardrop shape and press it on one end of the log to create the candle flame.

    7. Pick up the parchment paper and set your candle-shaped cookies a baking sheet.

    8. Repeat, making 3 more candles of varying sizes.

    9. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.

    10. Bake each cookie for 8-15 minutes until lightly golden brown around the edges. The bake time will vary based on the size of the cookie.
    11. Remove the cookies from oven and allow them to cool for about 2 minutes. Trim around each cookie to straighten out the edges.
    12. Allow the cookies to cool completely before frosting.
    13. Once cooled, spread and even layer of frosting over the cookie.
    14. Arrange colored Sixlets in slanted rows across the cookies.
    15. Then, arrange yellow Sixlets over the flame.
    Recipe Notes

Store your cookie at room temperature for up to 5 days if using a tub of frosting or up to 3 days if you used homemade frosting. The Sixlets will soften as they sit, so I suggest making these birthday candle cookies a day before you plan to serve them.

This would have been a fantastic way to decorate the pinwheel cookies for my daughter’s birthday! Unfortunately, they ended up kind of bare...but still cute!
