How to make Peanut Butter Puppies using Nutter Butter Cookies

Published: Jul 9, 2012 · Recipe by: Beth · This post may contain affiliate links.

Make some cute doggo treats and have fun with your kids! These Peanut Butter Puppies are so simple to make and just as fun to eat… if you can get over their cuteness!

In keeping with the theme of independence, I have decided to scale back some for the remainder of the summer. Don’t worry, I wont be disappearing, instead my posts will be shorter and my projects will be simpler.

Not only do I want to enjoy some summer fun, but I am also preparing our home for a wonderful arrival. No, I’m not having a baby, but my husband and I will be welcoming someone into our family. We will be hosting another exchange student and she arrives in early August.  I want to devote my time to her, to get to know her, and help her adjust to our culture before she begins school.

I have been very busy recently preparing projects to share with you in anticipation of my being totally and completely distracted and am so excited to share them with you. It will be challenge for me to resist posting them all right away. I was on such a roll transforming store bought cookies and snack cakes into cute edible crafts last week, that I even made some for Halloween, Christmas and Easter. I may break down and share the Easter one just for fun because it is too darn adorable to keep to my self. I hope you enjoy my creations including these silly little cookie pups.

Peanut Butter Puppies

You’ll need:

 Nutter Butter Cookies
2 white chocolate chips per cookie*
1 large milk or dark chocolate chip per cookie*
1 caramel square per cookie
black food coloring marker
small dab of creamy peanut butter per cookie
knife
cutting board

*I used Nestle White Morsels and Kroger Private Selection Milk Chocolate Chips. Callebaut Chocolate Callets are also a good size. You just want to make sure that the chips you use for the puppy noses are larger than the chips you use for the eyes.

Instructions:

Use a sharp knife to cut off the tips of your white chocolate chips. Draw pupils onto each white chip using a black food coloring marker.

Cut the tips off the milk chocolate chips.

Cut your caramels in half and form each half into a dog ear. If you prefer, you can roll the caramels out using a rolling pin and cut them into ear shapes, discarding the excess caramel. These will be lighter and easier to use if you need to move your puppies around a bit.

Use creamy peanut butter to adhere your decorations to your cookie.

That’s it. Aren’t they sweet?

Items used to make the recipe that are available on Amazon.com.

Since my daughter has a habit of bringing home stray dogs since she was a child, I made these for her 25th birthday bash. But I used chocolate cookie dough and marshmallow fluff and Nutella since she is allergic to peanut butter. They turned out just as cut, but a bit more work, since I had to shape the dough by hand to get the peanut shape.

I have sleep overs for my great nephews ages 2 1/2 & 51/2. We always make some type of easy-to-do cookies. THIS willl be perfect! They will get a kick out of making puppies! Last summer we made the pretzel Rolo fish cookies and the blue Jello in an actual fish bowl with the Swedish red gummy fish. Fun times for them making memories with their Great Aunt Nan.

If you can find any oval shaped sandwich cookie, it will work fine. The peanut shape is nice, but I think oval will work too.
