Let your kids have some fun with their lunch today by creating these corn dog centipedes or corn dog caterpillars. These snacks are fun to serve at a Halloween or bug-themed Earth Day party too!
If your kids like creepy crawlers and enjoy playing with their food, they will love crafting these corn dog centipedes and caterpillars.
They are so easy to make using store-bought mini corn dogs and chow mein noodles and would be fun to serve for Earth Day, Halloween, or any day.
I made them along with other bug-themed food for our Carnival of the Creepy Crawler party for Halloween back in 2010 along with a bunch of other creepy food.
Recipe originally published on August 29, 2011.
Some guests were totally creeped out at first but that didn't stop them from enjoying all of the yummy snacks and desserts.
Even if you create something as creepy looking as a Giant Cake Ball Spider or an OREO Cheese Ball Rat or even Chocolate Roach Infested Popcorn, people will eat it if it tastes great.
You don't need to be hosting a party to have fun making these snacks. Kids will have fun making them for lunch today.
Creepy Corn Dog Centipedes
Ingredients
mini corn dogs (use at least 9 per centipede, but you can use many more)
chow mein noodles or potato sticks
ketchup
Supplies
baking sheet
Instructions
Bake mini corn dogs on a baking sheet according to package instructions.
Remove from oven and reduce oven heat to 200 degrees.
Line up corn dogs widthwise into a squiggly line (use 9 or more per line.)
Press two long chow mein noodles (or potato sticks) into the first corn dog to create antennae.
Press two long, but shorter chow mein noodles (or potato sticks) into the last corn dog to create the back legs.
Then on all remaining corn dogs, press one chow mein noodle (or potato stick) on either side, creating legs.
Place in oven to keep warm until you are ready to serve.
Note: Don't bake the corn dogs at 350 degrees with the appendages attached as the chow mein noodles or potato sticks will burn.
Before serving, add two ketchup eyes.
Corn Dog Caterpillars

These corn dog caterpillars are a little cuter than those creepy centipedes.

Line up 5 corn dogs lengthwise so that each section is longer rather than wider.
Press two long chow mein noodles (or potato sticks) into the first corn dog to create antennae.
Attach three chow mein noodle legs for each body segment and have them curved toward the ground.
Place in oven to keep warm until you are ready to serve.
Just before serving add ketchup eyes.
Note: Don't bake the corn dogs at 350 degrees with the appendages attached as the chow mein noodles or potato sticks will burn.

Thank you for the good idea... my family and I love to read books and then have a theme weekend based on the book series we were reading, and fix foods to go with that series. We're going through the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series at the moment and was trying to find a way to turn the Centipede song into a meal or snack, and this fits perfectly!

I love that you base a weekend around a book theme. What a wonderful way to spend time together as a family. Enjoy making and eating your centipedes.

Hi Laurenann,
Thanks for noticing my attention to detail! Before I began working on this recipe, I did do my research because I didn't know much about centipedes. I do often take creative license with my creatures, but try more often to make them look realistic.

Thank you so very much for always researching your animals when you make cute recipes! As a biologist it's always delicious but slightly heartbreaking to come across decorated dolphins with gills or "centipedes" with as many legs as possible crammed in all over the place. The fact that you mentioned many times only having one pair of legs per body segment and even added the shortened modified legs of the last segment simply made my day. ๐ Thank you!!
And these look positively scrumptious, by the way. ๐

We LOVE corndogs around here, so we will be trying this one for sure.I'd love it if you would link up to my link party, Pinterest Tuesday. I am sure other moms would enjoy seeing your cute critters!

Kristin, I totally understand your fear, I feel the exact same way. I scream whenever I encounter a bug or spider. I know this recipe makes for a pretty gross looking centipede which is great for a creepy crawler themed party. I tried to balance the creepy with the cute for our party last year so that I could stomach having a kitchen full of bugs and other pests. You might like the caterpillars in my last post - they are quite adorable.

This is really cute, but as I have a huge fear of insects, I'm not sure I could pull this one off. ๐ Thank you so much for stopping by my blog--I'm glad I got the chance to check out yours!

Thanks Tiffany, that is a huge compliment coming from someone as creative and talented as you! So far the ideas keep popping into my head - I sure hope that trend continues.
