It's easier than you'd think to make and decorate a chocolate candy jar. For this 4th of July, create this red, white and blue Captain America White Chocolate Candy Jar!
When I planned the dessert menu for my Captain America M&M party, I knew that a 100% Edible White Chocolate Candy Jar would be the perfect thing to use to serve lots of M&M's.
I made my first chocolate bucket years ago for a client, and have been making them ever since. They really make an impressive looking candy jar and are wonderful to give as gifts. They really don't take much effort to create either. Let me show you how.
100% Edible White Chocolate Captain America Candy Jar
Ingredients:
white chocolate, melted and tempered, or melted white confectionery coating
white modeling chocolate
red and blue food coloring
Supplies:
1 plastic canister or jar*
*the inside needs to be smooth as ridges can keep it from unmolding
Instructions:
The first thing you need to do is measure the volume in your jar, by filling it with water and weighing or measuring it. This will give you an idea of how much white chocolate you will need to fill the jar.
Dry the jar very well, then fill the entire thing with melted and tempered white chocolate or melted white confectionery coating (candy melts.) Let the jar sit for 10-15 minutes.
The amount of time will depend on the thickness of the chocolate. Thin chocolate will take longer and thin coating may take up to 20 minutes. You can test this by pouring out some of the chocolate into your bowl. If the walls of your jar are too thin, just pour the white chocolate back in and let it sit longer. If it looks about ⅜ of an inch to ¼ inch thick, then it's ready.
Turn the jar upside down and allow the melted white chocolate to drip out. You can tap the sides and bottom of the jar if too much is sticking to the sides.
Use a metal spatula to scrap off the drips from the bottom of the jar.
When you turn the jar over, the top edge of the white chocolate should look smooth. If it's not, then either scrape again with the spatula or use your finger to smooth it out.
Turn the jar upside down on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and put it in the refrigerator if using pure white chocolate or in the freezer, if using confectionery coating. Let it chill for about 10 minutes.
When you peek in to look at the jar it should not have any dark spots. If it does, the chocolate is not yet hardened. Leave it a few more minutes. Just don't forget about it. If it's in too long it will get sticky
When the chocolate is completely set, remove it from the plastic canister. My canister is so smooth, that I can just pull it right out.
Allow the chocolate jar to sit at room temperate for at least 20 minutes before decorating.
To make a Capt. America shield out of modeling chocolate, you'll need several round cutters. Arrange the round cutter so that you will have even-sized bands of red, white, then red and still have room for a round blue circle in the center. I started out using a set of round cutters and used the largest cutter for the outside and the smallest for the inside.
Roll out a piece of red modeling chocolate and cut the largest round. Then roll out some white and cut a circle then a smaller circle inside, just creating a band. Attach the white band to the red circle with a small amount of water. Roll out some blue and cut out the center circle. Attach it to the red circle. Cut out a small white star and attach it over the blue.
If you really want to work at this, you can embed all the pieces together in one flat piece. I didn't bother.
Fill the bucket with M&M's and serve it along with other red, white, and blue desserts. Be sure to check out my Captain America party post for more ideas.
