Cheese makes a great appetizer for a Halloween party and there's no reason it has to be ordinary. Color it to make black cats, shape it into a witch hat cheese ball, or mold it into colorfully decorated 3-D sugar skulls. See all of these Halloween Cheese ideas below.
Did you know you can color cheese to make festive Halloween snacks? Or pour it into silicone molds to create cool shapes like skulls? You can even craft amazing Halloween cheese balls that look like black cats, witch hats, and monsters.
Today, I'm going to share some fun ideas for transforming blocks, shreds, and slices of cheese into cool Halloween cheese.
Let's start by making colored cheese.
A while back I discovered Velveeta Queso Cheese could be melted, colored, spread thin, then cut into decorations. I used the colorful cheese to make Cheese Ball Birthday Cakes.
For Halloween, I wanted to create some really simple cutouts of cats, bats, and witches to go over some full moon-shaped cheese and crackers. This time I used Velveeta's original orange cheese and colored it black.
I'm pretty sure it took less coloring than white cheese would have needed and it was vibrantly black.

black food coloring
non-stick baking mat (Silpat)
mini bat, cat, and witch-shaped cookie cutters
optional: round cookie cutter, just a little smaller than the size of the crackers
Instructions
Color Velveeta cheese black.
Cut Velveeta cheese into small chunks and melt in the microwave.
Stir in drops of black food coloring until you get a dark black color.
Spread it thin.
Quickly spread the melted cheese into a thin layer on a non-stick baking mat (Silpat.)
Freeze for 10 minutes.
Cut using Halloween cookie cutters.
Cut shapes out of the black cheese using small cookie cutters.
If the cheese gets too soft, put it back into the freezer for a few minutes.
Top crackers with cheese.
Cut white cheese slices into rounds using a cookie cutter. Just before serving set cheese rounds on crackers and add black cheese shapes.
Or top Babybel Cheese.
Alternately, top Baybel Cheese rounds with cutouts. You'll need really small cutters to make bats and cats that will fit on top of these pieces of cheese.
I used Halloween Linzer Cookie Cutters. They were the perfect size.
Top other appetizers.
You can also top other appetizers like Pimento Cheese Puffs with black Halloween cheese cutouts.
If you don't want to color the cheese, you can use black food coloring and stamps to add Halloween designs on white cheese.
I pressed a spider web impression mat into round slices of provolone cheese. Then, I brushed a thin layer of black food coloring onto a foam spider stamp and pressed it onto the spider web cheese.
It turned out great.
NOTE:
Anytime you eat anything made with black food coloring, it may temporarily color your teeth. Brush them well with toothpaste to wash the coloring off.

Cindy
Beth, are their any other cheese that can be melted besides the velveeta or american cheese. i dont care for them and have tried some but didnt work well due to the oil content. thanks........i love all the ideas!
beth
Hi Cindy, I have not found any others yet. I'm always looking, though. Most of the cheese I have tried to use have too much oil that seeps out when heated. Velveeta sure doesn't take like a good cheddar, but it does melt and harden like I need to make these cut outs. If I find another cheese that works, I'll be sure to share that information here!
