Calzone Hearts - Valentine's Day Dinner

Celebrate Valentine's Day by serving your sweetheart Calzone Hearts. Each heart-shaped pizza crust filled with a blend of cheeses topped with pizza sauce is easy to make and fun to serve.

You need cheesy, you need saucy, you need doughy. Make these Calzone Hearts for your loved ones and satisfy all their needs whether its lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack.

I mentioned earlier this week that I got a box of Valentine's Day goodies from Wilton recently and for days I have felt like a kid right after Christmas. I am having so much fun playing with all my new toys. One of the shiniest, prettiest, and heaviest things in my box was a new Wilton Dimensions 6 Cavity Mini Hearts Pan in which I made these Calzone Hearts.

    wilton dimensions heart pan

I just love the intricate design and those indentations in the top of the hearts were just screaming for some bright red sauce.

Well, maybe that was just the voice inside my crazy head!

But, crazy or not, I do think the bright red marinara sauce looks very pretty in these Calzone Hearts. It's exactly what I had envisioned when I first looked at the pan.

Most people would think to make cakes using this pan, and why not, that is their intended use. As we've already established, my mind is a bit crazy, I try not to make obvious choices.

At Halloween, I used another one of Wilton's pans to make Stuffed Pizza Skulls and they turned out great. I had actually, originally planned to make calzones in the skull pan, but wanted to keep it a very kid-friendly meal, so I just made stuffed pizzas.

Some kids hate ricotta cheese. I was one of them. I'm glad my tastes have changed over the years. Now I love it and am a huge fan of calzones.

You need cheesy, you need saucy, you need doughy. Make these Calzone Hearts for your loved ones and satisfy all their needs whether its lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack.

It's funny how tastes change. As a kid I thought a pizza wasn't a pizza without pepperoni, now I never eat it. I much prefer veggies or even ham and pineapple on my pizza. I chose to stuff my calzones with roasted red peppers and artichokes (pictured) and put pepperoni in my husband's.

That's one of the great things about calzones, or stuffed pizzas, you can customize them to your tastes.

    How to Make Calzone Hearts

Stir together ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, one egg, and pinch of salt.

Spray the inside of each heart with non-stick cooking spray. Open and unroll one tube of dough. Cut dough in half. Drape one piece of dough over the heart cavity. Gently press the dough into the sides and bottom of the pan.

Fill with 1 tablespoon pizza sauce and a little over ¼ cup of the cheese mixture. Add toppings of your choice. Repeat.

Fold dough over, pinching pieces together, cutting off excess.

You want enough dough to just cover and close around the top of each calzone heart. Brush egg wash over top.

If you've filled your hearts with various toppings, it's a good idea to mark them in some way.

I just put small pieces of the fillings on top.

    Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 18-24 minutes, until golden brown. Mine could have used another minute or two.

I love these! They turned out perfect and it's so nice to have a non-sweet, but still super pretty treat on Valentine's. I've often wondered about using bread dough instead of cake batter in those pans, and I just love how it turned out!!
