Have fun with your kids and make a fun Halloween Craft! This spooky Mummy Bucket is so easy to make and can be filled with your favorite Halloween candies!
When I was a kid my favorite two hours of the entire year happened on the evening of October 31st. Growing up in suburbia had it's share of fun, but nothing was more fun than spending an evening dressed in a homemade costume racing from house to house begging for candy. Arriving at home after two full hours of running I was exhausted but filled with anticipation. I would pour my pillow case filled with treasures onto the kitchen table and sit in utter amazement. All of these delectable sweets were mine. The trading would begin immediately as my brothers and sister and I would swap candies for our favorites, being sure to create a pile of Mounds and Almond Joy bars for my mom. There aren't too many candies that I don't enjoy, but of course I have my favorites. I love Twizzlers, Swedish Fish, Tootsie Rolls and Reese's Cups. I gave away anything sour and was more than glad to swap out bags of chips for a candy bar. I treasured my candy bars and had a special place in my heart for those households that passed out full size bars. There was one house in the neighborhood that could not be missed and often we stopped by more than once in an evening. The man of the house worked for Hostess and they always had a Hostess character in their yard to greet us. Every year we would meet a new character and get a different product. I'll never forget the year they passed out tiny loaves of Wonder Bread. I went back three times. We had so much fun making cute little sandwiches on that bread.
Now many years later our house is the place to be on Beggars' Night. Our house is always decorated and we pass out really fun candy like Pez, Halloween Peeps, or Nerds Ropes. Someday an adult will think back on Beggars' Night and fondly remember the lady on the block that always passed out the coolest candy and that lady they will be remembering will be me.
Last year we hosted our kid's Halloween party and many of the neighborhood kids attended. They all created a mummy bucket to use on Beggars' Night. It was so fun to see them come to my door and shout "Trick or Treat" while holding out their crafty pail to receive their treat.
This project is so simple that with a little guidance even very young kids can create their own bucket. If you decide to do this project this Halloween, try to buy your buckets at the end of the summer. They go on clearance then and you will have a lot of pails to choose from.
Mummy Buckets
Supplies:
1 beach pail (any color)
1 roll of gauze (3" x 4.5')*
2 wiggly eyes
glue (or double stick tape)
*I purchased these short rolls of gauze at the dollar store.
Squeeze glue out in three lines down one side of your bucket (or put one or two strips of double stick tape down one side of your bucket). Stick one end of gauze over glue and begin to wrap gauze around the bucket.
Wrap the gauze up and around the bucket gently pressing it into the glue. The end of the gauze will most likely not end up over the glue or tape, so glue or tape it down. Pull two layers of gauze apart a few inches down from the top of the bucket.
Glue or tape two wiggly eyes onto the bucket. I like to use two different size eyes to make the mummy look a little silly. Each of these mummy buckets will cost about $2.

i have memories of those houses you could not miss. my neighborhood never did much, but we'd go to other places and it was a lot of fun. i know one street had a lot of their neighbors at ONE house so you'd go in a circle in the yard and grab from each bucket.

it all depends on my mood... but 1 common ingredient seems to be chocolate! (peanut butter cups, milky way, and can't leave out a big, thick plain bar of chocolate...)

It's a tossup between M&Ms and candy corn. I don't dare keep either one around. 😉

A couple of years ago, I was walking with my kids and this guy, dressed up as a zombie was following us. My kids were little at the time, so I didn't say anything to them, but boy was I wierded out. I was actually afraid. I told them that we were done for the night and that I had more treats for them at home and we headed directly home.
Thanks again
