Are your kids ready to hop on their bus and head back to school?

I was one of those kids, that although I loved summer break, that was always excited to go back to school and I always rode the bus.

To get ready for the new school year, I created these Rice Krispie Treat School Buses.

I’m pretty sure that even those kids who aren’t thrilled about having to go back to school, might be excited to find one of these candy coated treats in their lunch box.

Rice Krispie Treat School Buses

8 rice krispie treats
6 ounces yellow Candy Melts
orange food coloring
6 Tootsie Roll Midgees
8 brown Mega M&M’s
black food coloring marker

Decorated Rice Krispie Treats

Unwrap the rice krispie treats.

Melt the yellow Candy Melts and add some orange candy coloring, to make school bus color.

Glue two rice krispie treats together using a small amount of the melted candy coating. Cut one end of the cereal treats to look like the front of the bus.

Flatten the Tootsie Roll Midgees (you may need to heat them on low in the microwave for a few seconds to get them soft enough) and cut out small square windows for the buses. I used a square plunger cutter, but you can use kitchen shears or a knife.

Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats

Set the rice krispie treats up on something. I used another treat, but you could just put them on a cooling rack.

Pour or spread (if your candy coating is thick like mine) over the treats. Scrape off any excess candy from the bottom of the treats.

While the candy coating is wet, add the Tootsie Roll windows.

Also, add the Mega M&M wheels.

Set the rice krispie treat school buses on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, and put in the freezer for about 5 minutes, until the candy coating hardens.

Use a black food coloring marker to add details to your school bus treats. You can add lines or even write the name of the school district on the sides of the bus.

These rice krispie treat school buses will stay fresh for several weeks if stored in an airtight container.

Another great memory, I used to love school buses so much that my mom made a school bus cake for my birthday one year. Your rice Krispie busses would have been a perfect addition to my party! :)
