Have fun with your kids making this fun back to school lunch or after school snack. Kids can fill these School Book Sandwiches with their favorite lunch meat and cheese.

School Book Sandwiches

How fun are these cute little sandwiches that are decorated to look like school books?

I’m positive your kids will have fun making and eating this fun school-themed lunch or after school snack.

Of course, you can make them yourself and serve them as a surprise to your kids. This snack just might get them a little more excited about doing homework.

school book sandwiches made using soft flour tortillas with lunch meat and cheese are decorated with food coloring markers

Each sandwich is easy to make using soft flour tortillas.

You can fill the tiny sandwiches with your child’s favorite lunch meat and cheese then use food coloring markers to make them look like school books.

SCHOOL BOOK SANDWICHES

You’ll Need:

  • soft flour tortillas
  • white cheese slices
  • slices of deli meat, like turkey or ham
  • mayonnaise
  • food coloring markers

cut two rectangles out of a soft flour tortilla then cut lunch meat and cheese into small rectangles to create the pages of the school book sandwiches

  • Cut soft flour tortillas into 4 1/4 inch by 2 3/4 inch rectangles. (You can change these dimensions if you’d like larger sandwiches.)
  • Then cut slices of white cheese and deli meat into 1 3/4 inch by 2 1/2 inch rectangles.

NOTE:

  • You’ll have lots of scrap pieces of tortilla that can easily be turned into chips. You can either fry them or brush them with oil and bake them until crispy then sprinkle on salt or cinnamon sugar.
  • The scraps of cheese and meat will make great toppers for a salad.

Spread mayonnaise over a tortilla rectangle. Then sandwich it around slices of cheese and ham before drawing the book's lettering one using food coloring markers.

  • Stack slices of cheese and deli meat, alternating the two until you have 5 slices or “‘pages” for your book.
  • Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of the tortilla rectangles, keeping it 1/4 inch from the edge then set the cheese and meat “pages” on one edge of the tortilla.
  • Fold the tortilla over the “pages” forming a book.
  • Use a food coloring marker to write the title of the book on the front of each sandwich.
  • Add some lines and repeat the name on the binding (edge) of the book.

NOTE:

The tortillas do tend to dry out a bit, so make them within a few hours of serving. Wrap the sandwiches well and store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.

I will definately give this a try…for my grand kids. When they were little, I used cookie cutters to cut bread into shapes (and the fillings!). The one was into "secret agent" stuff so I called the mini sandwiches (3 mini sammies from 2 slices of bread) "Secret Agent Sammies". They asked for them every time they came over!

I made these last night. Today is the classified luncheon on the teachers are supposed to supply the food. I was going to make deviled eggs but when I saw these cute little sandwiches, I immediately changed my mind. Especially since I am the school librarian. How appropriate is that?

My Mom had a 40% off coupon to a local craft store so I picked her up after school and we went shopping. I stopped by her grocery store and picked up the tortillas, turkey and cheese. Then we adjourned to her house to make them. She wanted to help, plus we weren't sure how long it would take.

Boy, they went fast! We used a pizza cutter and stacked the tortillas. I made a template to cut around. Assembly was fast and the markers were fun. In no time we were done. I even had time to join them for dinner and go on the dog walk.

Thanks for the great idea. I will give you full credit for any compliments received.

Oh, and we used cranberry mustard instead of mayo.

I'm so happy to hear that you had an easy time making your little school book sandwiches. What a fun snack to bring to the luncheon, especially considering you are a librarian. I hope they are a huge hit!

I'm starting to think about what I can do to make sure my daughters eat healthy while I am working this summer. I was thinking about packing them lunches every day – even though I'm the one leaving the house 🙂 – and these sandwiches would be a quick and fun meal that they would be sure to eat.

I think making something that looks fun but is healthy will get kids excited about it a sandwich rather than a bag of chips or box of cookies.

Have you checked out Bento boxes? There is a lot of cute stuff to be made.

I think these little books would be perfect for an American bento based on books or literary characters.

I thought of that while making these but was too lazy to run to the store to get colored tortillas. I think a big stack of multicolored books would look really cool at a party.

I agree. I love that you can personalize the book covers however you like. If you are a good artist, you can even add artwork to your sandwiches.
