Give your kids permission to play with their food! They will have so much fun decorating snack cakes. You'll be surprised at their creativity.
Decorating snack cakes is so much fun and over the past few months, I've shared tutorials for making all sorts of whimsical designs like Mickey Mouse Ding Dongs, Chocolate Snack Cake Bats, Bumble Bee Twinkies, Teddy Bear Snack Cakes, and more.
I thought it would be fun to invite some of my friend's kids over to have some fun decorating their own treats. I was blown away by their creativity and enthusiasm.
Even the older kids, several teenage boys, had a blast.
Here are some of their whimsical creations.
Aren't their snack cake creations clever and fun?
I love each and every one of them and so did the kids.
A snack cake party is so easy to set up, you don't have to put together a fancy display, just fill a workspace with supplies and let the kids get busy.
What you need to decorate snack cakes...
- snack cakes like Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Ho Ho's, etc.
- frosting
- fondant
- peanut butter
- Nutella
- candy eyes
- royal icing
- icing colors
- sugar pearls
- sprinkles
- candy
- pretzel sticks
- Pocky Cookie Sticks
- colorful cereal
- mini cookies
Workspace.
Give each child a paper plate or a piece of wax paper or parchment paper to work on. Things will get messy!
Set all the decorating supplies on your table in random order. The kids will find what they need easily enough and they actually preferred hunting for the perfect item to use to decorate their treats.
Allow each kid to decorate a few snack cakes. They will have lots of ideas and will be freer to be creative if they can have more than one cake.
Let them have fun.
The teens enjoyed this project more than I ever imagined.
They loved having so many candies, cookies, sprinkles, and edible decorations to use to make their treats.
I hosted the party just before Halloween so many of their cakes were decorated like monsters.
Let's take a look at the young food artists at work.
I had kids as young as 3 at the party.
All of the kids really enjoyed decorating, but I think some had even more fun eating ...
This party was so much fun that we've decided to add a snack cake decorating station at our Halloween party. Wouldn't your kids and their friends just love doing this too?

I'm not sure I would let a bunch of teenagers loose in my kitchen although it looks like they were enjoying themselves and NO food fights. My Gkids would a blast doing this. kbsbcadams@aol.co

This looks like so much fun! We've done cupcake decorating parties and cookie decorating parties, but never one with snack cakes. This would be great at Halloween.
