Monster Oreo Cookies – Fun Halloween Treats for Kids

These Monster Oreo Cookies couldn’t be quicker or easier to make and they are the perfect Halloween treats for your costume party or classroom snack. Kids are going to love eating them and making them.

Hello wonderful readers of Hungry Happenings! Meaghan from theDecoratedCookie.com here. Recently, Beth organized, planned, coordinated AND hosted a fabulous Fun Food Blogger Retreat for myself, Kim of The Partiologist, Jill of Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons, Norene of Party Pinching and Sue of Munchkin Munchies. We had such an incredible weekend, we are thanking her for all of her hard work by giving her a day off of blogging. (We all know she probably won’t take said day off, but maybe she’ll rest for an hour or so while we pop on here with some treats.)

Today I’m making you some crazy easy Oreo monsters for Halloween because that holiday is creeping up quickly. For these Oreo monsters, all you need to do is melt some candy melts in any of your favorite Halloween colors, pipe them on some Oreos and top them off with candy eyes.

Candy melts and disposable decorating bags are two of my favorite tools for decorating treats. This is a trick I shared with my fellow bloggers at the retreat: Because candy melts are quick to melt without a lot of heat, you can melt them directly in a disposable decorating bag in the microwave. Chocolate melts at a higher temperature, which can make the decorating bag too hot to handle, but not candy melts. Although, for the sake of safety, be careful and be sure to test the heat before handing the bag to kids, if they are helping you make these. Sometimes when you cook candy melts in the microwave, the bags get hotter with each successive melting.

The good news for beginners: The more imperfect your piping skills, the better your Oreo monsters will be. You are required to be imperfect. And that’s why I like food crafts like this one.

Or how about some monster cookie sticks? These are a lot like what I’m doing below.

Or try some crime scene cupcakes.

Now, on to these easy peasy monster Oreo cookies! A few notes: You can also decorate any cookies, store-bought or homemade, using this method, or even cupcakes and cakes.

how to make Oreo Monsters for Halloween

you will need:*

candy melts (orange, purple and electric green used here)
disposable decorating bags
Oreo cookies
candy eyes

*Find the candy melts, decorating bags, and candy eyes in the craft store. You can also find them online. I recommend Wilton candy melts and Wilton 12-inch disposable decorating bags.

what to do:

Line a baking tray with parchment or wax paper and place your Oreos on the tray. Set aside.

Place a handful of one color of candy melts in a disposable decorating bag. Microwave for 90 seconds at 70 percent power. Massage the bag for a bit so any residual heat can help completely melt the melts. If needed, continue to microwave at 15 second intervals until completely melted. Only work with one color at a time so the melts don’t start to harden before moving on to the next color.

Snip 1/4-inch from the tip of the decorating bag. Pipe a blob of candy melts on the Oreo. Don’t worry if you go over the edge. Immediately add two or three candy eyes. Repeat with the other colors with the rest of your Oreos. Let set well, about 30 minutes to an hour.
