Dairy-Free Chocolate Covered Strawberry Mousse Hearts

Published: Feb 10, 2015 · Recipe by: Beth · This post may contain affiliate links.

Want a light and refreshing dairy-free dessert to serve for Valentine’s Day that is also easy to make? Give these Dairy-Free Chocolate Covered Strawberry Mousse Hearts a try.

Each 4 ingredient heart was created using Silk Cashewmilk and Silk Dairy-Free Strawberry Yogurt Alternative.

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away, and I thought you might like an edible craft recipe idea that is simple to make and lower in calories than my usual fare. As an added bonus, it’s also dairy-free.

I am lactose intolerant and I’ve tried lots of dairy alternatives. My favorite is Silk Cashewmilk. It is thick and creamy, has 25% fewer calories than skim milk, and makes a great substitute for heavy whipping cream when used to make a chocolate ganache or glaze.

At Christmas, I used a cashew milk chocolate ganache to fill some Triple Chocolate Christmas Mice Truffles and no one could tell I had swapped out cashew milk for the cream.

I wanted to use the dairy-free chocolate ganache to make a dessert for Valentine’s Day. I decided to use it as a topping drizzled over dairy-free strawberry mousse hearts.

I used Silk Dairy-Free Strawberry Yogurt Alternative to make my lactose-free mousse.

I had not tried the yogurt alternative before and was pleased to find that its texture is pretty identical to yogurt and its flavor is sweet and fruity, and when mixed with some dairy-free whipped topping, it makes a really nice mousse.

To make my dessert festive I made the mousse heart-shaped, by using silicone molds.

Each strawberry mousse heart is light and refreshing and when topped with cashew milk ganache is rich and chocolaty too. If you like chocolate-covered strawberries, you’ll love this Valentine’s Day dessert.

What I really love is that after eating one of these hearts, I don’t feel guilty at all. If my calculations are correct each dessert has just under 200 calories. Not bad for a sinful tasting treat.

Dairy-Free Chocolate Covered Strawberry Mousse Hearts

Ingredients: (makes 6)

Strawberry Yogurt Mousse –
Silk Dairy-Free Strawberry Yogurt Alternative
dairy-free frozen whipped topping, thawed*

Chocolate Ganache –
Silk Cashewmilk
dairy-free semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped

*You can find dairy-free frozen whipped topping at the grocery store or health food stores, or if you prefer you can make your own using coconut milk.

Supplies:

Silicone Heart Mold with 6 cavities

Instructions:

step 1 – make the dairy-free mousse hearts

Fold together the 3 containers of Silk Dairy-Free Strawberry Yogurt Alternative and the whipped topping.

Pour into the silicone heart mold, cover with plastic wrap, and place in the freezer for at least 2 hours.

step 2 – un-mold the frozen strawberry mousse hearts

Push on the backside of each heart, releasing them from the mold.

While the hearts are frozen solid, move them to small dessert plates.

Allow them to sit at room temperature for 1 hour to thaw, or place in the refrigerator for up to 3 hours.

step 3 – make dairy-free chocolate ganache

Pour the Silk Cashewmilk over the finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate.

Heat in microwave on high power for 45 seconds.

Let sit in the microwave for 2 minutes, then remove and stir. If not completely melted heat for 10-second increments, stirring after each until melted.

Let cool for 30 minutes just until it thickens slightly.

You can see after that amount of time it coats the spatula. You want it pourable not thick.

If you wait too long and it thickens, reheat it for 8-10 seconds to thin it out.

step 4 – pour the dairy-free chocolate sauce over the mousse hearts

Just before serving, pour over the thawed strawberry mousse hearts and serve for a special Valentine’s Day treat.

Even if you aren’t lactose intolerant, this dessert is wonderful, and being Silk Cashewmilk creates the perfect match between creamy, delicious taste and fewer calories, it makes for a lighter dessert, which is always appreciated.

I love cashews but haven't heard of cashew milk before. I'll have to try that next time I make ganache!

    Happy Valentine's Day, Beth!

The heart dessert looks really "yummy" and impressive. Is it possible to use an other yogurt if Silk's isn't available? Will it change the consistency, etc.?

Is it possible to use a regular brand yogurt for this? Will it change the consistency any?
It looks like a very "yummy" dessert–impressive.

I haven't tried this with regular yogurt, but being the Silk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative is so similar to regular yogurt, I think it would work well too. If you try it, let me know how it turns out.
