S’mores Starfish

If you are looking for a simple summer treat that is super adorable, you’ve got to make these S’mores Starfish.

During my first year of blogging, I made a batch of homemade marshmallows and turned them into Starfish S’mores and they became an instant hit.

Homemade marshmallows are amazing. If you’ve never tried them, I encourage you to make a batch. I do realize, however, that you may not have the time or want to go through the effort of making marshmallows from scratch so that you can make these sweet treats, so I have come up with an easier method.

You’ll use Kraft’s Jet-Puffed S’moreMallows. They are flat, square marshmallows that you can find at the grocery store. They are made specifically for s’mores and are the perfect size and shape for these starfish.

Turn store bought marshmallow squares into these cute, crunchy, chocolatey S'mores Starfish. They'll add a touch of whimsy to any summertime party.

You simply cut the marshmallows into stars, dip in pure chocolate or candy melts, coat in graham cracker crumbs and add two candy eyes.

Your beach will be swimming in them before you know it. Each bag of S’moreMallows has 30 marshmallows, so you can make 60 starfish of varying sizes which is great for a party. If you only want a few for the kid’s afternoon snack, you can do that too.

I’m making a whole bunch to serve at a party along with some Crunchy Chip and Dip Chicken Patty Starfish.

How to make S'mores Starfish using store bought marshmallows. It's easy and fun.

To make the s’mores starfish, you’ll want to cut the marshmallows into stars. You can hand cut them, but that will take forever, so I suggest you grab some star shaped cookie cutters. You can use a variety of sizes from 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/2 inches. Grease them well with butter, then start cutting.

To make the starfish more realistic looking, cut each star shaped marshmallow in half to make them thinner. It’s easiest to do this with some buttered kitchen shears.

Melt and temper some pure dark chocolate or melt some candy melts and dip the marshmallows into the candy. Remove and allow the excess to drip off, then toss in graham cracker crumbs. It’s easiest to do this using a dipping fork. I love Wilton’s new dipping forks because they are nice and wide and hold these stars perfectly.

Note: For detailed instructions on melting chocolate or candy melts, see my Chocolate Making Tips page.

Making S'mores Starfish out of Jet-Puffed S'moreMallows is easy and fun.

Allow the marshmallow star to sit in the crumbs for about a minute. If you want, you can pinch the pointed ends to give them a less rounded shape. Lift the marshmallow out of the crumbs using a clean dipping fork or kitchen fork and set on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Continue dipping and coating until you’ve made as many starfish as you need.

To add candy eyes, brush off any excess graham cracker crumbs in the area you’d like to add the eyes, then use a dab of chocolate to attach two eyes to each starfish.

It's easy to make a beach full of S'mores Starfish for your beach or pool party. See how at HungryHappenings.com.

If you are serving these at a beach themed party, get creative and make a beach out of cookie crumbs or brown sugar sprinkled over a piece of ocean scrapbook paper. Set the starfish all over the beach and allow your party guests to pick them up off the beach.

Thanks, Sarah. One of my party guests had to shut her eyes to eat her starfish:) She said it was just too cute to eat, but she couldn’t resist.

You’re always so many steps ahead of me. While looking at them I wondered about a way to display them. Continued reading and you suggested a couple good ways to do that. You’ve made so many beach scene goodies (thank you – thank you) that it would be easy to do just one or two of them to go along with the starfish, but they’re plenty cute on their own.

Have never tried to make marshmallows but maybe when it gets a little cooler I’ll follow your recipe. If YOU say it’s good – I know it is!

It was fun to revisit this recipe idea and make it easier. I do love the homemade marshmallows but using the S’moreMallows made this project quick and simple, which I love too.
