Celebrate a special birthday with a Rainbow Tie-Dye Surprise Cake! This cake is full of surprises and will be sure to wow your friends and family when you cut into this brightly colored dessert!
After the first slice of this Rainbow Tie-Dye Surprise Cake is cut, you reveal the #5 hiding inside to all the party guests.
You’ll hear oohs and aahs and the obvious question, “how did you do that?”
Will you reveal the secret? That’s up to you!
Can you guess how that number got inside that cake? Would you believe me if I told you it was magic?
After spending all day creating this dessert, I can assure you it was not magic. Twitching my nose or waving a wand would have been a great way to create this, but alas, I am a mere mortal and had to do it the hard way.
If you are curious as to how it was created, you can see the step-by-step tutorial to
make my Rainbow Tie-Dye Surprise Cake over at Tablespoon.com.
But, before you go, check out these other cake ideas.
For those of you who don’t want to spend an entire day making a cake, but still want the cool tie-dye rainbow effect inside a cake, you can try this idea.
Doctor up a Betty Crocker Pound Cake Mix by adding a tablespoon of lemon zest and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Make the rainbow pound cake using the simple technique shown on the Rainbow Tie-Dye Cake tutorial and stop there. Just serve the cake as is or to make it extra lemony mix together 3 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 cups powdered sugar then pour it over top.
This cake may look pretty plain Jane on the outside, but one slice will reveal a burst of color within.
If you aren’t a fan of rainbow or want a cake for a different holiday, it’s easy to change it up.
This Red, White, and Blue Tie-Dye cake was created using the same tie-dye technique but has a different color palate which completely changes the look of the cake. It’s perfect for the 4th of July, Memorial Day, Flag Day, or Labor Day.
The recipe used for this cake is one of the best I’ve ever made. I know you’ll agree if you are a fan of coconut. The delicate cake has the most lovely coconut flavor but the real show stopper is the coconut buttercream frosting topped with white chocolate ganache. It’s heavenly.
You can find the recipe and step-by-step tutorial for this Red, White and Blue Coconut Cake, by clicking on this link..
If you are willing to put in the effort but want to celebrate something other than a birthday, it’s easy to make a few tweaks to create a fabulous cake for any occasion.
Check out my recipe and tutorial for this Raspberry Lemon “I ❤ You” Valentine’s Day Reveal Cake. The dessert was a true labor of love. I’m not going to tell you it was easy to make, but the reaction I got I cut the first slice was the ultimate reward.
This reaction you’ll get when cutting into this cake will change your life.
Can you image being served this “Marry Me?” Reveal Cake?
These surprise inside cakes can be created for just about any occasion.
I created this cake for my nephew’s eagle scout ceremony. Everyone in the room gasped as he cut the cake. It was the largest crowd to view one of these cakes being cut and I loved seeing their enthusiastic reaction.
The crowd was even bigger when I served this wedding cake a few months later.
The bride and groom tied the knot at our annual Halloween party, thus the design of the cake.
As they cut into the cake to reveal the surprise hiding inside, my heart was beating so hard. I was nervous that I placed one of the cakes backwards. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was that I was wrong. The cake looked perfect.
I’ve created quite a few surprise inside cakes, as well as, semifreddos on this site. These projects do require quite a bit of effort, but I’ve done my best to give you great instructions to follow so that you can make them yourself.
If you have any questions while you are working, don’t hesitate to ask.

Hungry Happenings has created some festive recipes for any birthday party that any girl or boy will love.
Why wouldn’t you just cut the first cake into the shape you want, instead of a bunch of cut outs and then bake it in the second cake?
If you have the skill to sculpt a number out of the very long cake, then you can certainly do it that way. I wish I had that ability, but I don’t. I found it much easier to use the cookie cutter.
Has anyone made this with a homemade pound cake?
I have not, but I'm sure it would work just as well. I used the Betty Crocker Pound Cake because I made the cake for the General Mills website, and they require that I use their products. It's a nice pound cake with good flavor and texture and it's very similar to homemade, so I can't imagine why the homemade would not work the same.
I was asked to make this for my goddaughter' s son's second birthday!! Trying a dry run this weekend!!!!

Love this idea! Is there a way to pin it?
If you hover over any image on my page you'll see big "P" pin button. Just click on that and you can add the pin. You can also scroll to the end of the post and use the P button in the row of social media share buttons. It's in between the G+ and the Facebook button. Thanks!
These cakes look amazing. Will be trying them. God has blessed you with a wonderful gift, keep it up.
Can you make this with a basic homemade batter? I have two children with dairy and egg allergies so I have my own recipes. I would love to do this for my oldest son's birthday in September.
Yes you an use any homemade cake you like. I just used a white cake to make a similar cake and it worked great.
Omg! Where can I get directions for putting the number inside? My daughter would live this for her 2nd birthday!

You are a genius!!! This is SUCH a fun and clever idea!!!!
Thanks, Georganne:)
I love your recipies! 🙂
WOW … sooo cool! Love how the tie-dyed number and fondant coordinate! You made tie dye cool again … just like the 70's!
Having grown up in the 70's, I was all about tie-dye. We made new shirts every summer.
This is just beautiful! Really pretty little cake…pinned. found at cast party wed. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks for stopping by and for pinning:) I hope you have a great week too.
Wow! One of the coolest cakes I have seen! This is awesome, Beth!
Thanks so much, Kristi:)
Hey, how did I miss this last week? So awesome! I really love your matching tie-dye fondant and number inside. Great idea. (Thanks for the baker's love too. You're sweet to link to my Peace Cake, Beth.)
Your peace cake was one of my favorite surprise inside cakes and it was the perfect inspiration for my cake. You are really the most brilliant food designer I know!
And it works wonderfully!!!… I'll try to make it!, hope it comes out as perfect as yours! =)
Have fun making your cake:)
Hi Beth! This cake is amazing! I wanted to let you know that we will definitely be featuring it at Fun Family Crafts, but I had to change the address to direct our readers to where the tutorial actually is at Tablespoon.com. Looking forward to seeing your next creation!
That is great Cindy. I like to link here so that people can leave comments and engage with me, then they head over to see the tutorial.
Wow, what an awesome cake. I'm pinning this! 🙂
Thanks so much, Kat. I appreciate the pin:)
This is the coolest most creative "surprise inside" cake I have ever seen, love it Beth!!
Thanks, Lindsay Ann:)
Loved it!!!
I'm intrigued by the texture of the 'twice-baked' cake… is it too different from the white pound cake?
Regards from Perú! =)
Anilu, it is the strangest thing, but even though the 5's are already baked when they go into the pan with the raw cake batter, they don't taste any different than the rest of the cake once it's all baked. I really can't explain the science behind it. I'm just happy it works:)
It is because the cake mixes you are using are full of chemicals and have an indefinite shelf life.
All those food dyes are SO harmful for human consumption.
Party pooper
Very cool! Big smiles here:@)
Stupendously awesome!! So colorfully cheerful. I know they were thrilled with such a festive 5th birthday cake! :o)
wow, beth. I checked out the post on tablespoon.com. you continue to amaze… this is SO COOL! (I've always been a fan of your surprise cupcakes, but the possibilities for this are endless…) the tie-dye cake alone rocks! so excited. I'm hopeful to hear about the new wilton fondant though – I think fondant is so yuck! I much prefer using your candy clay…. :0) thanks again!!
jodi from atlanta
Thanks Jodi. I love how this cake turned out. I too prefer modeling chocolate (candy clay) over fondant, but covering a large cake with modeling chocolate can be challenging. This new fondant is so good that I now am happy to cover a cake in fondant. I'll still use modeling chocolate for lots of projects, but am happy to finally have a fondant I like using.
Lemon pound cake sounds delicious and to serve a tie dye version would be a surprise to all! I think the 5 year surprise inside cake is one of my favorites of all time!
I ate way too much of the lemon pound cake. It was such a nice change from cookies and yellow cakes.
HOLY COW!!!!!! you are just WAAAAAY too cool for school! :>D
LOL! I was a total dork in school, so it's nice to know that at my age I'm now cool:)
What a beautiful cake! I'll have to try that tie-dye pound cake, that is probably the coolest loaf cake I've ever seen. 🙂
Thanks, June. I thought the colors in the pound cake were so pretty and everyone who got a slice was intrigued by the method I used to create the colorful effect.
