I remember the rush of emotion I felt when we saw the first installment of the How To Train Your Dragon series.
The bond between Toothless and Hiccup is so endearing and all the dragons are just so darn cute. The animators at DreamWorks really did an amazing job of making the beasts look lovable.
How can you not fall for the big, expressive eyes of Toothless, the goofy, toothy grin of Meatlug or the sweet silly smile of Stormfly?
With each movie comes more and more dragons to love and now in this third and final installment, the How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World movie will introduce us to a dragon for Toothless to love.
This movie looks like it has something for everyone whether you like love stories, comedies, or action flicks and the hidden world looks magical.
I was so excited to create some cute How To Train Your Dragon treats just in time for the film to open in theaters.

How To Train Your Dragon Lollipops
When I was asked to create a family friendly treat to celebrate the release of the new movie I was giddy. I had so many fun ideas floating around in my head but I finally settled on making these How To Train Your Dragon Lollipops.
I wanted to share something that you can make for a How To Train Your Dragon The Hidden World party that would really look amazing on a food table.
Each of these two dimensional lollipops is made by "painting" candy melts over top of a template. You print out an image, set a clear acetate sheet over top, and paint or pipe colored candy melts over top just as if you were coloring in a coloring book.
It takes about as much time as it would take you to color a coloring page to make one of these lollipops.
Watch this video to see how.

How to make How To Train Your Dragon Lollipops
What you'll need:
- template of Toothless, Light Fury, Meatlug, and Stormfly
- clear acetate sheets
- cardboard or small cutting boards
- food-use-only paint brushes (one for every color you will use)
- small squeeze bottles or pastry bags fitted with small round pastry tips (#3) or parchment paper cones
- candy melts in a variety of colors
- jars, small bowls, or coffee mugs
- optional: electric skillet to keep the candy melts melted and warm while you are working
You can use pure white chocolate if you are skilled at tempering and coloring white chocolate and at keeping very small quantities in temper for extended periods. Just do not melt white chocolate (chips or bars) and expect this to work if you don't temper the chocolate.
Candy melts are much easier to work with when making these lollipops.
You can read all about the differences between white chocolate and candy melts (confectionery coating) on my Chocolate Making Tips page. There you'll also find melting and tempering instructions.
Print a Template:
- The first thing you need to do is to print out the template to use as a guide for making your lollipops.
- I used images of Build-a-Bear plush toys including Toothless, Light Fury, Meatlug, and Stormfly.
- You can use any images you like including coloring pages, just be sure the pictures don't have too much detail or it will be difficult to make your lollipops.
- Also, remember you will be painting or piping chocolate over the top of the images so you need the picture to be large enough that you will be able to add the small details. You can't paint chocolate as thin as you can paint with paint.
- If you click on the image above you will get a printable page that is sized correctly.
Cover template with clear acetate.
- Cut out around each of the templates then tape the paper to a piece of cardboard or a small cutting board.
- You want the boards to be large enough to fit the template but small enough to fit into your freezer on a flat surface.
- It is important that each template be on it's own board.
- Tape a piece of clear acetate over top of each template.
- You can find sheets of clear acetate at crafts stores, art supply stores, or education supply stores.
Melt colored candy melts (confectionery coating wafers).
- Choose the colors of candy melts that you will need for each lollipop.
- Candy melts are available in all sorts of colors but you can also stir drops of special oil-based candy coloring into white candy melts if you prefer.
- Do not try to color candy melts using grocery store liquid food coloring or icing coloring as these are water-based coloring and when stirred into the candy melts will cause the candy to seize or thicken.
- You can see the colors I used to make these How To Train Your Dragon Lollipops in the picture above and I've listed them below. Just note that I did blend some of the colors together as I worked.
- Candy melts are available in all sorts of colors but you can also stir drops of special oil-based candy coloring into white candy melts if you prefer.
Night Fury Toothless Lollipops:
- black (if you want vibrant black then add a bit of black candy coloring)
- gray (lighten some of the black with a bit of white)
- vibrant green
- white
Light Fury Lollipops
- black
- light blue
- white (I used bright white and traditional white which is actually off white)
Meatlug Lollipops
- light brown (blend together light cocoa candy melts with white, yellow, and vibrant green or use peanut butter melts)
- greenish brown (blend together some vibrant green with white and light brown)
- white
- yellow
- black
Stormfly Lollipops
- light blue
- white
- black
- yellow
- vibrant green
How to melt candy melts in an electric skillet:
- Place the candy melts wafers in jars or coffee mugs then set them down into an electric skillet.
- Fill the skillet with hot water so that the water comes about halfway up the sides of the jars.
- Turn the skillet on the lowest setting, preferably the WARM setting, and allow the candy melts to melt, stirring them often.
- You can keep your candies melted all day using this method, just be sure to keep refilling the water if needed.
NOTES:
- If you don't have a skillet you can use a large slow cooker set on warm. If you use a low setting be sure to keep an eye on it. Some pots get hot and can scorch your candy melts. You can turn it on and off as needed.
- You can also use a heating pad, but that will only keep the bottom of the jars warm so be sure to stir the candy often.
- If you don't want to wait for the candy to melt slowly in the skillet you can melt the candy melts in the microwave first then just keep them warm in the skillet.
How to melt candy melts in the microwave:
- Pour the candy melts into small jars, bowls, or coffee mugs.
- Heat on high power for 30-second increments, stirring after each, until melted.
- If you heat several jars at one time you can increase the increments to 45 seconds until most of the candy is melted then go back to 30 seconds.
- If you don't use the skillet, then just heat the candy as needed. This may mean a lot of time spent going back and forth to the microwave.
How to make Toothless Lollipops
The basic technique for making these How To Train Your Dragon Lollipops is to paint or pipe the various colors of candy melts over the template starting with the small details first.
You need to start by adding any color that will show on the dragon's face like the highlights in the eyes, the eye color, the nostrils, etc. You will layer colors over top in order to make a thick candy lollipop. So what is painted onto the acetate first is what will show up.
- Start by dipping your paintbrush into the white candy melts then paint on the white highlights in Toothless' eyes.
- Dip a different brush (use a different one for every color) into the green candy melts then paint the irises of Toothless' eyes.
- Add two white nostrils.
- Freeze the template for about 1 minute in order for the candy to dry.
- You can let the candy air dry but some of the colors will streak or spot if left to air dry, so I recommend freezing them just until they harden for about a minute.
- Then remove the template and let it sit for about 5 minutes to warm back up to room temperature before adding more decorations.
- Using deep black add four spots along the center of the Night Fury's forehead, a line for his mouth, all of his spikes (bumps around his head), and the pupils of his eyes.
- Cover the face with gray candy melts.
- By the time you get all the spikes painted, the other black details you painted on his face should be dry enough that you can pipe the gray candy over top.
- You actually don't want the black spikes to be completely dry before adding the gray over top. You want the black and gray candy to blend together slightly so that the spikes, once hardened, don't fall off.
- Once you have added one layer of gray over top you want to lay a lollipop stick down the middle of the candy.
- Then pipe on a second layer of gray candy melts all over the entire surface of the lollipop. This will make the candy thicker and keep the stick from breaking off.
- Place the candy in the freeze for about 5 minutes just until the candy hardens.
- Then peel the candy off the acetate to reveal the amazing-looking Toothless lollipop.
TIPS:
- Be sure that the details like the eyes have dried before painting or piping candy over top.
- Don't leave the lollipops in the freezer for too long as they may crack if too cold.
- Use FOOD-USE-ONLY paint brushes for sanitary reasons. Brushes with thin bristles are great for detail and those with plastic handles work best because you will wash them often.
- Dip the paintbrush down into the melted candy. If you try to get the candy off the side of the jar it may harden too quickly before you can paint it onto the template.
- If the candy melts harden around the bristles of your paintbrush do not try to pull it off or the bristles might get pulled out. Simply dip the candy-coated brush into the hot candy melts and swirl the brush around allowing the hardened candy coating to melt.
- I highly recommend wiping the brush on a paper towel each time you finish painting with it to keep the brush clean.
- For larger areas, you can paint on the chocolate but I recommend spooning some candy melts into squeeze bottles or pastry bags fitted with a pastry tip with a small round opening (like a #3 tip) and piping the chocolate over top. You can also use parchment paper cones if you prefer.
- Make sure the candy you are painting or piping over top is not too hot or it may melt the candy below.
- If you are keeping the candy melts warm in the skillet and you are scooping out candy that is close to the bottom of the jar it may be too hot. Let it cool on the paintbrush or in the squeeze bottle or pastry bag slightly.
- Candy Melts will get spotty if left to air dry so be sure to freeze the candy as soon as you have the lollipop made.
- This is one of the main reasons it's important to cut the templates and use separate pieces of cardboard for each lollipop.
How to make Light Fury Lollipops:
- Paint on the white highlights in her eye then add the blue iris.
- Use black candy melts to create the pupils, the shadow around her eyes, and nostrils.
- Let that candy dry (by freezing) before piping white candy melts around the entire surface of Light Fury, adding a lollipop stick, and adding a second layer of white candy melts.
- Freeze for about 5 minutes until the candy hardens, then peel the lollipop off the acetate and flip the lollipop over to show off Light Fury's adorable face.
TIPS:
- Use bright white to make the highlight then traditional white (which is a bit off-white) to make the head.
- You'll need a very fine bristle paint brush to get the thin shadow around Light Fury's eyes.
- You can add a mouth if desired. You'll notice in the pictures in this post that some of the Light Fury Lollipops have a light gray mouth while some do not. She's cute either way.
Now that you have the technique down, you can use it to make just about any dragon in lollipop form including Meatlug and Stormfly.
Meatlug Lollipops
- Paint on the white highlights in his eye.
- Add a black smile and two black nostrils and the black pupils for his eyes.
- Pop the template in the freezer for a minute to allow those details to harden.
- Then once the template warms up to room temperature add the yellow eyes and white for his chin.
- Also add the light brown wing/horn thingies on top of his head. (I'm not sure exactly what they are!)
- Pop the template in the freezer again then let it sit before piping on the green, adding the lollipop stick and piping on a second layer of green.
- Freeze for about 5 minutes until hardened.
- Remove and peel off the template.
- Let the lollipop sit for about 5 minutes then pipe on 4 white fangs.
TIPS:
- Be sure to add a second layer to the back side of the wing/horn thingies on top of Meatlug's head or they might get too thin that they will break off.
Stormfly Lollipops
- Paint the white highlight in his eye.
- Paint on the yellow horn in the center of his head.
- Add the black pupils and shadow around his eye along with two nostrils and a line for his mouth.
- Pop in the freezer for 1 minute then remove and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the vibrant green in his eyes and the white of his chin.
- Then add the yellow spikes along his head before piping light blue over top, adding a lollipop stick, and adding a second layer.
- Freeze for about 5 minutes before removing and peeling off the acetate.
TIPS:
- It's very important that you add a second layer of candy over the yellow spikes along Stormfly's head. I'd use yellow candy melts to do this.

Go long do these store and how would you store them. I’m wondering how far in advance I can make them?
Beth Klosterboer
They will taste the best if eaten within one month but can stay fresh for several months. This will depend on the freshness of your chocolate/candy melts. I usually store lollipops in an airtight container (Rubbermaid, Tupperware, or a metal cookie tin). Keep them in a cool (not cold) dry place that is not in direct sunlight. If you can store them in an area that is 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit, that is best.
