Rice Krispies Treats decorated for Halloween as an adorable mummy. |
I just taught my first Hungry Halloween cooking class to kids yesterday and had so much fun. During this hands-on class I taught the students how to create their own Wolfie Pop, from the cover of Hungry Halloween. They each made a few pops and were so excited to take them home to show their siblings and parents.
After the class, I was inspired to create another project that is fun for kids and came up with these adorable "Mummy Pops." I used a store bought Kellogg's Rice Krispies Sheet but you can make your own batch of the cereal treats at home, if you prefer. I find that the large sheet of cereal treats just save me time, but they do cost a bit more than a homemade batch. I find them at GFS (Gordon Food Service) in my town, but they are also available on-line - Link to buy Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treat Sheets.
Just a few notes about the recipe: You will need to melt more white confectionery coating than you will need to coat your pops so that you can dip all 10 pops with ease. You can make more modeling chocolate out of your excess, or simply spread it on a parchment lined baking sheet and freeze it for 10 minutes to harden it. Then you can use it later for another project.
I also suggest making two batches of the white modeling chocolate to assure you have enough for this project. The amount you use will depend on how thick you roll out your modeling chocolate to make the mummy bandages.

Use this recipe and let me know how it works, I love the extra gooeyness it adds!
Just follow the recipe in the link provided, cut them into the shapes needed, and use them in the steps below:
Use a 3" round biscuit cutter to cut 10 circles from the Rice Krispies Treats Sheet. Insert a wooden craft stick into each of the treat circles.
Sprinkle some powdered sugar onto your work surface. Roll out modeling chocolate into a long strip. Use a pizza cutter and ruler or a multi wheel pastry cutter to cut ¼" wide strips. You will need about 80 5" long strips. Set on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Note: You can also use a pasta machine for this step. Roll out the chocolate and cut into fettuccine size noodles.
Draw small pupils onto the M & M's with the food coloring marker. Hold one pop by the stick and dip into melted white confectionery coating. Hold treat above bowl and let excess coating drip off. You may also choose to just use an offset spatula to spread the chocolate on the treat. Set on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Immediately (as the coating is still wet), attach two eyes and lay modeling chocolate bandages across the pop in a criss-cross pattern. Gently press bandages into the coating to make sure they are secure.
Cut off the modeling chocolate bandages around the edges of the pop. Place pop in the refrigerator or freezer for 5 minutes to harden the confectionery coating. Repeat with remaining pops.
These mummy pops are a perfect addition to any Movie Monster Munchies party. They will be enjoyed by kids of all ages. Wrap them in clear cellophane or in a cellophane bag and tie with a ribbon to make adorable party favors for each kid to take home. Or use them as prizes for your costume contest. Have fun and be sure to send me pictures of your own mummy pops.

Can't wait to try this recipe. Thank you. How long can you store in refrigerator or in freezer?
Beth
I just store them in airtight containers. They will keep for several weeks. If you refrigerate or freeze them, wrap them well, and keep them wrapped while they defrost. That will keep condensation from forming on the modeling chocolate. Enjoy:)

really nice!

That's one of the best looking recipes I've seen yet for Halloween. I always loved frozen rice crispy squares, but covered in chocolate is just too yummy.
