Fried Taco Footballs
Some people throw footballs while others throw parties. I’m guessing if you are here then you are like me, the party planning type.
If you are hosting a tailgating or homegating party for the big game this year you’ve come to the right place. Over the years I have created so many fun and festive football-themed snacks and desserts to share with you here and I can’t wait to show you what I’ve come up with this time.
How fun does that party spread, pictured above, look to you? My table is decked out with football-themed partyware and exciting game-day snacks including Fried Taco Footballs.
These football-shaped fried won tons are stuffed full of taco meat and a blend of black beans and peppers. They are fairly simple to make and I know your party guests will gobble them up while cheering on their favorite team.
How to make Fried Taco Footballs
You'll need:
- cooked taco meat
- canned black beans, drained and rinsed
- sauteed peppers
- shredded cheddar cheese
- egg roll wrappers
- egg wash
- sour cream
You will need to start by blending together your favorite taco fillings. I flavored ground sirloin with taco seasoning and tossed in black beans, peppers, and cheese. Get creative and use whatever fillings you like.
- Brown ground beef (I like to use ground sirloin) in a large skillet.
- Add water and taco seasoning and simmer until most of the liquid evaporates.
- You'll need 1 cup of meat for the filling for this recipe.
- Meanwhile, saute some diced bell peppers. I used yellow peppers, but orange, red, or even green will work.
- Toss the peppers with the taco meat and some black beans then sprinkle on some cheese and heat just until the cheese begins to melt.
- Remove from the heat and let the filling cool slightly.
-
Cut 3 football shapes out of each egg roll wrapper using a football-shaped cookie cutter or knife.
-
Whisk together 1 egg and some water to create an egg wash.
-
Brush some egg wash over one football-shaped egg roll wrapper.
-
Spoon one tablespoon of the taco filling onto the football-shaped egg roll wrapper.
-
Set another football-shaped egg roll wrapper over top and press and seal the edges.
-
Repeat creating a total of 30 footballs shaped tacos.
-
Heat oil to 350 degrees F.
-
Fry your taco footballs until deep golden brown, about 1 minute, flipping them over as needed.
-
Remove from oil and set on paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Spoon sour cream into a pastry or zip-top bag.
-
Pipe sour cream laces over each football before serving.
Can I make these ahead?
Yes.
- If you plan to make these Fried Taco Footballs for your party, you can cook your taco meat then toss it with sauteéd peppers, black beans, and cheese earlier in the day.
- I’d also recommend you cut the egg roll wrappers using a football-shaped cookie cutter then place them in a zip-top bag and refrigerate them until needed. Then, fill a pastry bag with sour cream and fill a pan with oil.
- About an hour before the party starts, you can assemble the taco footballs, cover them with plastic wrap, and pop them in the fridge until you are ready to fry them.
- Don’t do this too early as the egg roll wrappers can dry out and become brittle. Then get all the other snacks and desserts set out on your table.
- Greet your guests and enjoy some time together before popping back into the kitchen to fry up the taco footballs. In about 10 minutes this amazing game day snack will be ready to serve just before kick-off.
- If you must, you can fry these ahead of time then just warm them in a 250-degree oven for about 10 minutes.

- You can fill your Fried Taco Football with any of your favorite taco fillings. This combo is my favorite. I usually brown ground sirloin, then remove it from the pan and sauté the peppers then toss in the black beans. I spoon the meat back in the pan and sprinkle on the taco seasoning with water and let it simmer until the liquid evaporates.
- I found it easier to sprinkle the cheese over the taco meat and allow it to melt before spooning it onto the egg roll wrapper footballs. That way I could easily measure out 1 tablespoon of filling for each. You could also use thin cheese slices and cut them into smaller football shapes if you want your Fried Taco Footballs to be extra cheesy.
- Set your fried taco footballs onto Bounty Paper Towels to drain off the excess oil.
- I get the best -ooking laces by using a pastry bag fitted with a small #3 or #4 round pastry tip, but you can simply snip the tip and pipe out the sour cream. You can also fill a small zip-top bag with sour cream if you don't have a pastry bag.
- If you make these ahead of time you can reheat them in a 250-degree oven for 10 minutes.
