These delicious Football Cupcakes are sure to score big with hungry football fans. Each chocolate cupcake is wrapped in a football-themed modeling chocolate wrapper. The entire cupcake is edible including the wrapper.
After making edible cupcake wrappers for the holidays including Snowman Cupcakes, Pilgrim Cupcakes, Gingerbread Cupcakes, and Rudolph Cupcakes, I'm hooked. I don't know that I'll ever want to eat a cupcake any other way.
Wrapping soft and chewy modeling chocolate around a cupcake not only looks cool, but it adds a layer of chocolate flavor, that really enhances an ordinary cupcake.
These football cupcakes are wrapped in modeling chocolate made with milk chocolate. They look great and taste even better! I can't wait to bring them to my friend's Super Bowl party.
To make these edible football cupcake wrappers, I simply cut out milk chocolate flavored modeling chocolate in the shape of a cupcake wrapper and added white laces.
To make it realistic-looking, I added dimples all over using an impression mat and made it look like the white chocolate laces were coming out of the football.
I'll show you how to decorate these chocolate football cupcake wrappers below.
Milk Chocolate Football Cupcake Wrappers
Ingredients
modeling chocolate made using milk chocolate
white modeling chocolate
cocoa powder
chocolate cupcakes
chocolate frosting
I like to make homemade modeling chocolate (click the links above to see the recipe) but you can use store-bought modeling chocolate too. I've shared links below to purchase it from Amazon.
Supplies
cupcake wrapper template
non-stick baking mat
fondant rolling pin
pizza wheel
football impression mat
optional, metal clay extruder
pastry brush
The day you want to serve them, lower the cupcake back into the edible wrapper, add some frosting and you are ready to go.

Instructions
Cut out modeling chocolate cupcake wrappers.
Print out a cupcake wrapper template.
Cut out around the template. Wrap it around one of your cupcakes, to see if it is the right size. You need the template to overlap at the ends by at least ½ inch, so adjust the template as needed. Re-size then cut out a new template.
Roll milk chocolate modeling chocolate out on a non-stick mat using a fondant rolling pin. Cut out around the template using a pizza wheel.
Add dimples using an impression mat.
Set the football impression mat on the edible cupcake wrapper. Rub on the mat leaving dimples all over the modeling chocolate.
You just want to rub over the dots, avoiding pressing down on the areas of the mat that have the laces and stripes.
I just used the middle section of the football.
Decorate the football wrappers.
Brush cocoa powder over modeling chocolate cupcake wrappers and brush off excess.
Fill a clay extruder (one that has only ever been used for food) with white modeling chocolate. Extrude strips of modeling chocolate. Use water to attach two modeling chocolate strips vertically in the middle of each cupcake wrapper.
Add four short laces across the two vertical strips. You can, if you prefer just cut strips using a knife or pizza wheel.
Press the blunt end of a wooden skewer at the edge of each of the laces creating the holes.
Wrap the cupcakes.
Oops, I forgot to snap a picture of this step using the football cupcake wrappers.
Wrap an edible wrapper around a cupcake, sealing the edges with a bit of water.
If you want, you can frost the sides of the cupcake before adding the wrapper. I don't find it necessary. But I do add a big swirl of frosting on top. Add as much as you like.
Serve your cupcake with a fork.
Storage
If you need to store these for more than a day. I suggest you store the modeling chocolate wrapper in an airtight container separate from the cupcakes.
The moisture from the cupcakes will affect the texture of the modeling chocolate. You can go ahead and wrap the cupcakes forming the cupcake wrapper, then pop the cupcake out of the wrapper.

I do have some really easy projects here on my blog that you might want to try. These, I'd say, are a bit challenging, but certainly not too hard. Once you learn to work with modeling chocolate, you'll discover it's much like working with play dough:)

These are so cute Beth. You always come up with these awesome ideas!

Haha! This just cracked me up. I do have to say snacks are for sure the best part of ANY football game. As for our home teams..there's always next year!

I'm positive I've never watched an entire football game, but I do love the snacks!

These turned out awesome, Beth! I love the texture you added. It really make the modeling chocolate look like a football!

I love those impression mats. They do really add a touch of realism.

The only time i really get excited about the many football games hubby watches, are at playoffs time. I can not for the life of me come up with a cute football craft. This one takes the (cup)cake! I love the ingenious way you incorporated the football texture into the wrapper. Super awesome..and we do need our chocolate fix!

It's funny, because I am not a football fan, but I have had fun making all this food. We are just eating it. None of it will actually make it's way to a Super Bowl party. Unless the Vikings are playing, my husband doesn't care, and I care even less:)
