New Year’s Eve Mediterranean Pinwheels

Published: Dec 28, 2013 · Recipe by: Beth · This post may contain affiliate links.

This festive New Year’s Eve appetizer is easy to make but looks really impressive. Your party guests will have fun counting down to the new year while snacking on these Mediterranean Pinwheels.

Mediteranean Pinwheels shaped into 2014 for New Year's Eve

If you are hosting or going to a New Year’s Eve party, make something fun to share like these Mediterranean Pinwheels.

The pinwheels are easy to make using store-bought dough. They are stuffed with artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red pepper, and feta cheese. Yum!

You can serve the pinwheels as individual appetizers or you can arrange them into the New Year that you are celebrating. I made these New Year’s Eve Pinwheels on December 31, 2013, so I shaped my pinwheels into “2014.”

Just arrange your pinwheels into the year you will be celebrating.

You will need a large area on which to serve the pinwheels. They take up a lot of room!

I set mine on a granite countertop on a moveable island. You would cover a large piece of cardboard with tin foil or use a large cake board.

Let’s make Mediterranean Pinwheels

Ingredients:

Pillsbury Crescent Recipe Creations Seamless Dough Sheets – This dough is the same as crescent rolls only it comes in full sheets. You could use crescent rolls, just be sure to pinch the seams together. You could also use tubes of pizza dough.

veggie cream cheese – I like the flavor of veggie cream cheese, but you can use plain cream cheese or any other flavor you think will go well with the other ingredients like spinach/artichoke or garlic.

marinated artichokes – Drain the artichokes well and chop them into small pieces.

sun-dried tomatoes – Use a jar of sun-dried tomatoes that are packed in oil. Just drain them and pat them dry.

roasted red peppers – You can roast peppers yourself over a flame or in your oven, or you can just use a jar of peppers. Just drain them well and pat them dry before chopping them into small pieces.

feta cheese – Use your favorite feta cheese. It will add a nice tang to the pinwheels.

spread cream cheese over the crescent roll dough sheet then top with feta cheese, roasted red peppers, artichokes, and sun-dried tomatoes

step 1 – top the crescent roll dough sheet with ingredients

  1. Unroll both tubes of dough.
  2. Spread half of the cream cheese on each dough sheet.
  3. Sprinkle half of the artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and feta cheese on each dough sheet.

roll up the crescent roll dough sheet around the filling, then cut the roll into slices

step 2 – roll and cut the pinwheels

  1. Roll up starting at the long end.
  2. Pinch the seams together.
  3. Freeze for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Cut into 1/2 inch thick slices.

step 3 – brush eggwash over the pinwheels

  1. Line a baking sheet with non-stick tin foil or spray a non-stick pan with baking spray.
  2. Arrange the pinwheels so that they write out “2014,” or whatever new year you will be celebrating when you make these.
  3. Brush egg wash in between the pieces, where they touch, to help them stick.
  4. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.

step 4 – bake

  1. Bake in a 400-degree Fahrenheit oven for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Slide off the baking pan onto a large platter or cutting board.
  3. Serve hot.

I used a jumbo 10-inch wide spatula to move the pinwheels from the tin foil-lined baking pan to my granite countertop.
