Minion Santa Cake: The Ultimate Holiday Movie Night Treat

This post is in partnership with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Are you ready to invite the lovable Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes, and those mischievous Minions into your home this holiday season? Whether you are watching the Despicable Me series for the first time or the fiftieth, nothing makes a family movie night more memorable than a themed dessert.

Minion Santa Cake - Despicable Me 3

Watching movies at home is one of my favorite traditions. There is nothing quite like curling up in a recliner with a sweet dog and a plate of treats to enjoy a night of laughs.

Since the Minions are always a hit with both kids and adults, I decided to give one of my favorite designs a festive makeover: The Minion Santa Cake.

Despicable Me 3 DVD and Minion in Santa Suit Cake

Why This is the Perfect Christmas Cake for Beginners

If you saw my Minion Prisoner Cake, you know I love using the "star tip" piping method. This technique is incredibly forgiving and creates a professional-looking texture without needing perfectly smooth fondant or complex sculpting skills.

This Santa Minion is dressed in his holiday best, complete with a red coat, a gold buckle, and a fluffy white hat. It’s a heartwarming project that captures the same whimsy you feel when Agnes finally finds her real-life unicorn!

Dress up your Minion cake for Christmas by putting him in a Santa Suit.

    Instructions

    1. Carve the Shape

Carve a long, oblong oval out of your 9x13 sheet cake. Keep the bottom edge slightly flatter so the Minion looks like he is standing. Use the leftover cake scraps to cut out a triangle shape for the Santa hat and "glue" it to the top of the head with a little frosting.

    2. Prep Your Bags

Fill individual pastry bags fitted with star tips for each color. Reserve a small amount of black frosting in a bag with a small round tip for the fine details.

    3. Pipe the Santa Hat & Face

    • Hat: Pipe red stars over the top triangle. Use white frosting to create a "furry" rim and a pom-pom at the end using stars or swirls.
    • Eyes: Pipe two silver-gray circles for the goggles. Inside those, pipe a small black circle (the pupil) and fill the rest of the circle with white frosting.
    • Goggle Straps: Pipe a gray line around the goggles and a black band extending to the sides of the cake.

    4. The Suit & Body

    • Yellow Skin: Fill in the areas above and just below the goggles with yellow stars.
    • Santa Suit: Pipe the red coat across the middle and bottom. Add a horizontal black strip for the belt and a white fur trim along the center of the coat.
    • The Details: Pipe a gold square in the center of the black belt for the buckle.

    5. Arms and Legs (Optional)

If your cake board has extra room, pipe red frosting "arms" and "legs" directly onto the board. Finish them off with black stars for the gloves and shoes.

Pro Tips for Vibrant Holiday Frosting

    • The Best Red Frosting: To get a deep, vibrant red without using a whole bottle of dye, color your frosting 24 hours in advance. The color deepens significantly as it sits.
    • True Black Frosting: Start with a chocolate frosting base before adding black food coloring. It tastes better and reaches a dark "goggle" black much faster.
    • Shimmering Gold: For a belt buckle that pops, mix a little edible gold luster dust into your yellow frosting.

    Ingredients
    • 9x13 inch baked sheet cake
    • 2 ½ cups red frosting
    • 1 ½ cups white frosting
    • ⅓ cup silver gray frosting
    • ½ cup black frosting
    • 2 tablespoons gold frosting
    • 1 ¼ cups yellow frosting
    Instructions
    1. Carve an oblong shape out of the cake. The bottom edge can be a bit more flat.
    2. Cut one of the cake scraps into a Santa hat and attach it to the top of the cake using red frosting.
    3. Spoon all the frosting colors into individual pastry bags, each fitted with a star tip, reserving half of the black frosting.
    4. Spoon the reserved black frosting into a pastry bag fitted with a #3 or #4 round tip.
    5. Decorate the cake by piping stars all over the surface and sides.

    9. Pipe a gray line one either side of the goggles then pipe a black band down the sides of the cake for the goggle straps.
    10. Pipe on the red coat, black belt, and white fur trim.
    11. Pipe on a gold belt buckle.
    12. Pipe yellow above and just below the goggles.
    13. Pipe red frosting onto the cake board to create arms then pipe on black gloves.
    14. Pipe red frosting onto the cake board below the Minion to create two legs then then pipe on black shoes.

    Recipe Notes
    • To make this cake, you carve a simple oblong shape out of a 9-inch by 13-inch sheet cake, then pipe frosting stars over the top. It's one of the simplest cake decorating techniques you can use, and I love it.

    • I started by finding a picture of a Minion in a Santa suit and used that as my guide. If you need to, you can print out an image in a size that will fit your cake, then cut out around the pieces, lay them on your cake, and mark around them so you know where to pipe on the frosting. If you can freehand the design, go for it; otherwise, create yourself a template. That's what I did. In the video, you'll notice guide marks on my cake.

    • To get a really vibrant red frosting, you may need to use quite a bit of red coloring. I suggest you color the frosting a day ahead, cover it, and refrigerate it overnight. The red will intensify as it sits. That way, you won't need to use as much coloring.

    • For black, start with chocolate frosting and add black food coloring.

    • To get shimmering gold, add some edible gold luster dust to the yellow frosting.
