Hi everyone, it’s Kim, The Partiologist! With the Super Bowl being only days away, I wanted to make a cake for the occasion. Remember the Ugly Christmas Sweater Cake I created a few weeks ago? Well, I hope you didn’t pack that sweater pan away yet. In fact, don’t ever pack it away, I have a feeling I’ll be using it all year long. Starting today with this Referee Cake.
I thought about making a Jersey, but didn’t want to show favoritism to my team. A referee is part of every game, so why not a referee jersey?
Frosted in buttercream with a fondant collar and whistle, it could be the only time everyone agrees with the referee.
Let’s get started before a flag is thrown.
Grab the Wilton sweater cake pan and spray it with Baker’s Joy or other baking spray.
I found that one white cake mix, using the egg white only recipe works perfect. When I made it the second time with the egg recipe, it puffed up waaaaay to much in the center and took too long to bake.
Start decorating the cake by fitting two pastry bags with a #46 decorating tip.
Fill one bag with white buttercream frosting and the other with black buttercream frosting.
Begin by piping two black stripes down the front of the jersey.
Add two white stripes on each side of the black stripes.
Continue alternating stripes until the middle of the cake is covered.
Begin piping stripes down the sleeve, alternating colors.
Replace the #46 decorating tip with a #9 round tip and pipe a line, covering the seam.
I’m not sure why, but I sprinkled white sanding sugar on the entire cake. Seriously, I don’t know why and I wish I had left it off. So skip this step!
To finish the edges, pipe white frosting around the bottom of the cake making a border.
To make the collar, roll and cut a 7 1/2″ x 2″ piece of black fondant.
Before it dries, fold the bottom up.
Place the cut side down, curve around and fan out the ends for the collar.
Let dry until firm.
Roll and cut a square out of black fondant.
Place the collar over the square, mark the back points and trim off.
Add a bit a water with a brush and add the collar.
Time to make the whistle.
Press a long piece of black fondant through a clay extruder.
Lay it out as you would place it on the cake.
Roll a piece of black fondant in a circle and press down one of the edges.
Continue shaping the fondant until you have a whistle.
I think we got through the play without any penalties!
