Want something fun to do with all those hard boiled eggs you have on hand this Easter? Create some hilarious Hatching Chick Hard Boiled Eggs.
When I made these silly little hatching eggs, I thought they were pretty cute.
But, then I staged them for the photographs, had them sitting upright, and was about to snap a shot when one of them fell over. Seeing those skinny orange matchstick carrot legs and chicken feet pointing upwards just cracked me up.
My husband came into the room to see what was so funny.
He found my giggling to be slightly more amusing than the eggs.
He loves that I can find such joy in my creations and he did agree that this simple edible craft idea was pretty clever and even a bit funny.
It's hard for me not to smile and chuckle a little bit every time I look at these pictures.
The process of making these really helped bring me out of a haze over the weekend. Ever since arriving home from Florida, I've been fighting off whatever has had my husband down for two weeks now. It took a hold of me this past week despite my best efforts to stay healthy.
I really hate to take time to be sick. It's impossibly hard for me to stay in bed and do nothing. It felt good to get up and get in the kitchen if only for a short time to make these Easter eggs.
Thankfully, I woke up this morning feeling a bit better and am anxious to get back to work. Easter is such a wonderful time of year to make edible crafts and I feel so far behind. I hope to catch up soon.
Hatching Chick Hard Boiled Eggs
Step-by-step instructions - (see the video tutorial below)
To make the chicken legs, cut 3 inch long matchsticks out of large peeled carrots. Cut those matchsticks so that each end comes to a point.
Cut ¼ inch slices from a large peeled carrot. Press an "E" alphabet cutter into each carrot slice. Use a wooden skewer to help you remove the carrot from the cutter.Cut the edges of the "E" off so that your carrots look for like a flat "W" or a chicken foot. If you don't have an "E" cutter, you can hand cut your chick feet.
Poke a hole in the center of each foot using a wooden skewer. Poke a carrot stick into the hole, removing any carrot that pokes through the bottom of the foot.
Insert two carrot chicken legs into each hard boiled egg.
For fun, serve your hatching hard boiled eggs on a bed of crushed Triscuits or shredded wheat.

That's really charming little chicks ! I wonder where to buy the little "E" alphabet cutter. Have to cut it ourselves then.
I learn from TV cooking program to boil my hard boil eggs in my rice cooker. Very simple if you have one at home. Arrange them standing at it's tip ( so that the yoke will in the center when cooked ) and pour in 1/3 cup of water and cook it like cooking the rice. When it popped up, let it stand for 1/2 hr then pour in water to cool them. Crack each and put them in drinkable water -- Asia tape water can't drink. When we drop the cracked eggs into the water, the membrane will be wet and we can peel it easily. Dip it in the water again if can't peel.

Thanks, Mrs. Lee,
You can find the little alphabet cutters at craft stores like Michael's, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby, etc. If you don't live in the states you can order the Wilton Fondant Alphabet cutters from Amazon or from Wilton directly. There is a link at the bottom of the post to purchase them on Amazon.
I have a rice cooker and am going to have to give that method a try. Sounds simple. Thanks for sharing.
