Brighten someone's day by giving them Smiley Face Lollipops! These simple treats are made from Oreo Cakesters and they are sure to make a friend or family member smile.

    smiley face lollipops

I've always loved the simplicity of a smiley face; they, well, make me smile. My goal today is to make you smile!

Many of my cute kid's treats, admittedly, do require quite a bit of work like my Candy-Filled Sunshine Smiley Face Cookies. Well, not this one. This food craft couldn't be easier.

Grab a package of Oreo Cakesters, some lollipops or craft sticks, yellow candy melts, and a food coloring marker and in about 20 minutes you can have your own smiley face lollipops.

    Smiley Face Lollipops (makes 12)

Before you begin, if you don't have experience working with or melting candy melts, read my Chocolate Making Tips tutorial.

    Ingredients

12 Oreo Cakesters (I used Doublestuff)
14 ounces melted  yellow candy melts* (or use white and color with yellow candy coloring)
    12 lollipop or craft sticks
black food coloring marker*You want your candy melts to be kind of thick so you get a nice coating on your cakester, however, if your melted candy melts are too thick, you may need to add some Paramount Crystals (recommended) or a bit of vegetable oil in order to thin them out. Add a very small amount at a time until you have the desired consistency.

    Supplies

    glass or mug
    parchment paper
    baking sheet

    Instructions

dipping OREO Cakesters in yellow candy melts.

Dip Cakesters into yellow candy melts.

Unwrap Oreo Cakesters and insert a stick into the cream center. Pour your candy melts into a glass or mug.

Dip the Cakester into the candy coating. Lift the Cakester out and allow excess candy coating to drip off. Set on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Repeat, coating all the Cakesters.

Place in the freezer for 5 minutes. Remove and allow the pops to come to room temperature.

smiley faces drawn on yellow lollipops

Draw smiley faces on the lollipops.

Use a food coloring marker to draw smiley faces onto your lollipops. Allow food coloring ink to dry before packaging in cellophane bags. Or just tie some ribbon onto the lollipops and arrange them in a container to set on your table at your party.

    That's it. Simple, right?

Thanks Natalie. Another reader was also having trouble with her food coloring markers and here is what I suggested...

If I'm having a problem drawing with them, I'll dip them in some food coloring and allow the marker to soak some of it up. Then I dab it on a paper towel, then draw. It works really well for me. Also, I always store my markers upside down. If you store them on their side or right side up, they wont work well. I just put all of them in a glass and keep them in my cupboard. The Americolor markers seem to work the best for me. I have other brands, but have more trouble with them.

        I hope this helps.

Hey, came over to check out your blog after you linked in "Be Different Act Normal". I love some of the ideas you have. Not that I need more awesome food in my life but it's still fun and I certainly see some I want to try (and aim to share with friends, no really, well maybe). Great work!

We don't have anything like Oreo Cakesters here in Australia. Is there anything else you could recommend??

Hi Belinda, if you have any kind of cookie or cake that has a cream filling you should be able to get a lollipop or craft stick into it so you can dip it. You could also use or make rice krispies treats cut into circles then dip them. An Oreo Cakester is very much like a Whoopie Pie and I would think you could make and use homemade whoopie pies. You may just need to let them sit for a day or so before dipping so they are a bit more sturdy. It will depend on the recipe you use. I hope this helps.

Love your blog. Your cakesters are cute. My DD loves them. I made my first cake pops this past weekend. I used Wilton's candy melts and found it was a little too thick. Can I add a little veg oil in too thin?

Thank you! I highly recommend buying some Paramount Crystals to use to thin your Wilton Candy Melts. They are essentially the same fat that is used in making candy melts and are little solid flakes. When you use them to thin your candy melts, your candy will harden perfectly. You can use oil which will also thin out the candy melts, just be aware that it wont harden as solidly. That is fine for most things, but if you are making molded candies and want your candy to have snap like a candy bar, your better off using the paramount crystals. If you are making cake pops, the oil should work fine.

Adorable! How do you get the markers to work so well??? I bought some from Amazon a few months ago and not sure if I got a bad batch but they don't seem to work very well on chocolate. I used the same brand of markers. Hope it was just a bad batch I got!
