My party guests had so much fun picking the M&M Candy Apples from this
Rice Krispie Treat Apple Tree. This cute dessert is a great decoration for any summer party!
My Apple Harvest Party was really wonderful and I was so delighted my friends really enjoyed all the desserts I prepared. They couldn't believe their eyes when they spotted this Rice Krispie Treat Tree filled with Candy Apple M&M's on the dining room table.
None of my friends where shocked that it was edible, because they know me so well, but that didn't mean they weren't impressed. It was really fun watching them pick the tree apart when it came time to have desserts.
Just a few weeks ago, I created a similar tree, on a much smaller scale, for on top of a cake. I created the trunk and branches out of rice krispie treats then made the leaves out of white chocolate popcorn. I added cherry sours for the apples.
I learned a few lessons while making that tree, like adding structural support is a very good idea. I loved how the tree looked with the white chocolate popcorn, but I wanted to experiment to see how it would look made completely out of rice krispies and with the new Candy Apple M&M's. Both trees look pretty sweet.

M&M's Milk Chocolate Candy Apples
Edible "Glue" -

Instructions:
This tree stands about 1 feet tall so it needs supports in order to stand up. I purchased a square piece of wood, a 1 inch thick dowel rod, a 1 inch wood screw and a three-quarter inch fender washer. My husband attached the dowel rod with the screw and washer to the board. it's nice to have a handyman in the house. I'm sure many of you can do this yourself, but I usually leave the woodworking to Jim.
Once you've created the stand, cut a hole in the middle of a cake board and set it on top of the wood.

You can also check out how we taste tested 20 versions of the Rice Krispie Treat recipe to come up with the absolute BEST Rice Krispie Treat Recipe. Just substitute this recipe for the one I have above and follow the steps listed below:
Start making your rice crispy treat grass. Heat the butter, marshmallows, and green candy coating, in a large microwave-safe bowl on high for about 45 seconds. Stir then returned to the microwave and heat until completely melted. Mine took about another 25 seconds. Remove from the microwave and stir in the green food coloring until you get the desired shade of green then add the rice crispy cereal.
Press the green rice crispy treat on top of the cake board filling out the entire area.
Repeat this process using semi sweet chocolate and Cocoa Krispies to make the dark rice crispy treats for the trunk. Now begin to sculpt my tree trunk up and around the wood dowel.
After you get the trunk started you can begin to add branches. The rice crispy treat will be soft, so you need to support the branches, paint a coating of melted chocolate over them, and allow them to dry. I laid strips of tin foil over the grass just in case the chocolate dripped.
Continue to add branches, painting on chocolate as you go, and allowing them to dry completely.
You really need to have enough branches just hold the rice crispy treat leaves, so basically you want a good structure at the bottom and a handful of branches throughout the tree.
Add a second coat of chocolate's to the entire tree then place it in the refrigerator for about 15 min.
Meanwhile make the last batch of green rice crispy treats using the same method as above. Allow the rice crispy treats to cool until they are no longer warm to the touch.
Remove the tree trunk from the refrigerator and begin to add the green cereal treat leaves. Add a small amount near the center of the tree then place the tree back in the refrigerator for 5 minutes. Remove the tree, and add some more cereal treat, place it back in the refrigerator for a little while, then add more. If you add the treats too quickly the branches might break.
If you find that the rice crispy treat has dried out too much to stick, put it back in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Then try to add it to the tree. You can also use a little bit of melted green candy coating to help the pieces stick.
Attach candy apple M&Ms to the tree using melted green candy coating. Also attach some of the candy apple M&Ms to the rice crispy treat grass.
To store this wrap it in plastic wrap and keep it on your counter at room temperature for up to several days.
When you serve it just tell your party guests to break off pieces and enjoy.
You can find bags of Candy Apple M&M's only at Walmart, so be sure to stock up.

It's absolutely fantastic! How did you support the branches?
Beth
Thanks, Kathy. I just added a lot of chocolate to each Rice Krispie Treat branch to make it strong enough to hold the weight of the "leaves." I also curved the thick branches so that they would hold (cup) the rice crispy treat "leaves." If the branches would have been straight, they might have broken under the weight of the cereal treats but the curved leaves acted like a cup to hold the leaves.

I tried your recipe for a birthday cake and it was great! A bit soft, though, and drippy. I ended up with less of the leaves because they kept stretching/dripping off the tree. Should I reduce the amount of chocolate in the mixture? I assume the reason for the chocolate is to make the mixture softer and more moldable?
Beth
Hi Laura, I'm so happy to hear you made this Rice Krispie Apple Tree. The chocolate is actually added to make the rice krispie treat more dry a bit more solidly than a traditional rice krispie treat which is quite soft. As the chocolate hardens it should make the "leaves" adhere more firmly to the branches. I have a feeling your room was quite warm and that is why it might have stretched off the tree. If you try this again, and you are working in a room that is warm, place a clean fan blowing over the tree. The cereal treat should dry faster and stay in place.
