    Birthday Marshmallows

Modified: Sep 5, '23 · Published: Feb 17, '12 · By: Beth Klosterboer · Commission earned on paid or sponsored links.

Celebrate someone's special day by making these Birthday Marshmallows. These simple Marshmallow Birthday Candle Kabobs are so easy to make that even kids can make them on their own.

    birthday marshmallows candle kabobs.

Do you love or hate Peeps? Me, I love 'em.

Easter would not be complete without biting into a marshmallow chick or bunny covered in crunchy sugar. I never thought to use store-bought marshmallows to make this treat at home, but was inspired by Meaghan from The Decorated Cookie who is the author of Sugarlicious, a new book filled with whimsical and wonderful edible crafts, to try my hand at it to make the Marshmallow Birthday Candle Kabobs pictured above.

    Sugarlicious cookbook.

The creative ideas found in Sugarlicious are so inspiring as is the author herself.

Meaghan's talent explodes on the pages of her new book which is filled with cookies, cakes, cupcakes, petit fours, cookie pops, cake pops, fondant figures, modeling chocolate decorations, and marshmallows.

Each of her beautifully photographed and illustrated recipes includes easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions along with a detailed list of supplies needed so that beginners to advanced bakers can replicate her projects.

Meaghan's Sparkly Rainbow Marshmallow Kabobs really caught my eye. I followed Meaghan's instructions to create my own version of her marshmallow kabobs.

    Ingredients

    marshmallows
    colored sugar
    shortening
    water

    Supplies

    kitchen shears (scissors)
    tall lollipop sticks
    wooden skewers

    Instructions

making sugar-coated birthday marshmallows that look like birthday candles using water, shortening, colored sugar, and marshmallows.

I thought it would be fun to turn a marshmallow kabob into a birthday candle which would be great for birthday party favors or to top off a cake.

    To make marshmallow birthday candles:

    • Cut one marshmallow in half.
    • Cut another marshmallow into the shape of a flame.
    • Poke a toothpick into those a marshmallow, dip it in water, shake off the excess, and sprinkle on colored sugar.
    • Repeat, coating a total of 3 whole marshmallows, 2 halves, and one flame for each candle. Use a variety of colors for the marshmallow candles if you'd like and make the flame red, yellow, or orange.
    • Allow the marshmallows to dry overnight.
    • Then, brush a long lollipop stick or wooden skewer with shortening and insert it into the marshmallows so you have one whole marshmallow, one half, another whole marshmallow, another half, another whole marshmallow, and then the flame.

    Packaging

Package your marshmallow kabobs in cellophane bags and tie the bags with ribbons to give these sweet treats as party favors. If you plan to serve them for dessert at a birthday party, you can simply arrange them in a tall vase. You could even use them to decorate the top of a cake.

    Storage

You can store your marshmallows in an airtight container for up to 5 days but they taste best if consumed within 2 days.

These are so sweet! Do you think mini-marshmallows would work? I'm already giving out a lot of sugar at my son's bday party and I'm thinking minis would be better size-wise. Anything I'm not thinking of, being inexperienced and all?

Sure, Rae, these should work fine with mini marshmallows. Just use smaller sticks. You could even use short wooden skewers, which are a bit thinner than lollipop sticks. Have fun!

I like my peeps just a little bit stale. These candles are so cute! I'd much rather have these on my cake than real candles.
