    Easy Oreo Crabs

Kids will have so much fun making these Easy Oreo Crabs with red licorice lace legs, candy eyes, and Red Candy Melts shells. These cute treats are perfect food crafts for kids to make for a summer party.

    Easy Oreo Crabs

Hello Hungry Happenings readers! Thank you for letting me visit and add my own fun food craft to Beth's wealth of fun food craft awesomeness! The last time I was here I made these Monster Oreo Cookies, so I used myself as inspiration and updated the Oreos for Summer with these easy Oreo crabs.

When I think of Summer, I think of the beach. And when I think of the beach, I think of growing up on the Jersey shore and having crabs pinch my toes in the water. (Among many other shore thoughts, but the pinch toes memory is strong.) These Oreo crabs are pretty much an even-easier version of my crab cupcakes. The licorice legs and the candy eyes are the two key ingredients for cute, edible crabs. For the licorice, you can use red licorice lace, available online or in candy stores, or use the Twizzler's Pull n' Peel licorice from the grocery store. The candy eyes are available online, in craft store, and in some grocery stores.

You'll also need red candy melts and disposable decorating bags, both of which are available at the craft store. Disposable decorating bags are my favorite tool to use when creating just about any food craft. I use them for piping not just icing on cookies, but to melt candy melts and piping the candy, to make pancakes, to pipe frosting on cupcakes... for anything where a decorating bag helps avoid big messes.

    you will need:

    • Oreo Cookies (Double-Stuff used here)
    • red licorice lace or Twizzler's Pull n' Peel licorice
    • scissors
    • 12-inch disposable decorating bag (or a freezer Ziploc)
    • red candy melts
    • candy eyes

    what to do:

Separate the licorice and cut pieces about 1 ½-inches long. Carefully separate the Oreos. Press six pieces of the cut licorice into the icing as legs.

add red licorice legs to Oreo Cookies to make crabs

Melt ½ to ¾ cup of red candy melts in the microwave at a time. Microwave for 90 seconds at 70 percent power. Continue to microwave at 15 second intervals until the melts are mostly melted, and then use the residual heat to full melt.

You can melt directly in the decorating bag or in a microwave-safe bowl and then pour into the decorating bag. (If heating directly in the bag, make sure to not overheat.) Snip the tip. Pipe a dot on top of the Oreo icing and legs and replace the top of the Oreo.

Pipe and fill a circle on top of the Oreo and add two candy eyes. Let the crabs dry well, at least one hour.
