It is so easy to make delicious Tootsie Rolls at home. This recipe has the perfect blend of milk and dark chocolate with a slight hint of orange flavoring. Kids of all ages will love these chocolatey treats. Package them up and they make great gifts for friends and family.
    Course: Dessert
    Cuisine: American
    Keyword: candy, chocolate, Tootsie Rolls
    Servings: 40
    Author: Beth Klosterboer
    Ingredients
    • 6 ounces milk chocolate
    • 6 ounces dark chocolate
    • ⅔ cup powdered sugar
    • ½ cup light corn syrup
    • ¼ teaspoon orange extract
    Instructions
    1. Melt the milk and dark chocolate either in the microwave, using short bursts (30 seconds) of high power, stirring after each, or on the stove in a double boiler (see notes below for instructions).
    2. Sift the powdered sugar over your bowl of melted chocolate.
    3. Stir until all of the sugar has dissolved.
    4. Continue to stir, until the chocolate cools down. It is important that you allow the chocolate and powdered sugar mixture to cool before adding the corn syrup. If the chocolate is too hot your candy can become greasy once you add the corn syrup.
    5. Pour the light corn syrup and orange extract over the mixture and stir just until combined.
    6. Do not over-mix.
    7. Place this fudgy candy in a zip-top bag and flatten to about ½ inch thickness.
    8. Set aside, at room temperature, for one hour to allow it to cool completely.
    9. Then, remove the candy from the bag and knead it just until smooth.
    10. Break off pieces and roll into ¼-inch thick ropes.
    11. Cut into 3-inch long pieces.
    12. Wrap in wax paper, if desired.
    Recipe Notes

Store in an air-tight container for up to 3 months.

Double Boiler Melting Method: Fill a pot with 1 inch of water. Set a tight-fitting bowl over the top of the pan so that there are no gaps around the edge (you don’t want steam to escape and get into your chocolate). Heat the pan of water over low heat. Pour the chocolate into the bowl and allow it to melt slowly, stirring often, until melted.

It doesn't have a recipe. It only tells what's in it, sort of.. Not what kind or how much or how to.... Just a idea of what you can use.

This recipe calls for dark chocolate. Is that semi-sweet or darker?

        Hi Donna,

You can use semi-sweet chocolate for a more mellow flavored Tootsie Roll or use bittersweet chocolate if you prefer a more intense chocolate flavor. I do not recommend anything over 92% cocoa content, however. I personally used chocolate with 46% cocoa content and the candies tasted great. Enjoy!

Oh my goodness, Beth! My granddaughter, Lydia, and my pa-in-law both are Tootsie Roll fiends! That you can make them with your own favorite chocolate bars is awesome and seeing that they will last for 3 months means I can make start making some Christmas candy now! Thanks for such a fun recipe. :o)
