Serve these homemade football-shaped soft pretzels at your Super Bowl party, a tailgating party, or a football-themed event. They are easy to make using store-bought pizza dough.
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Line two baking trays with non-stick tin foil or tin foil that's sprayed lightly with baking spray.
Unroll one tube of Pillsbury Pizza dough onto a cutting board.
Cut twelve ½-inch wide strips and six ¼-inch wide strips across the short side of the pizza dough.
Roll each piece into a log.
Cut the thin short log into three pieces.
Wait until the foam dissipates so it's easier to see the pretzels in the water.
Allow the excess beer to drain off.
You are ready to shape the footballs. For each pretzel, you'll need 2 thick long pieces, 2 thick short pieces, 1 long thin piece, and 3 very short thin pieces.
Wet your hands and shake off the excess water but do not dry them.
To make the footballs:
Set two long pieces of pizza dough onto one of the prepared baking pans so they form the outer shape of a football.
Set the thinner long piece down the middle overlapping on each end of the football.
Lay three of the thin, short pieces of dough across the middle strip to make the football laces.
Finally, set two short, thick pieces of dough so they curve at opposite ends of the football.
Cut off any excess pizza dough.
Sprinkle pretzel salt over the pretzel.
Do not pick up and move your pretzels or they will stretch out and lose their shape.
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce. These pretzels are good warm or cold but are best the day they are made.
If you need to make these in advance of your Super Bowl party, make them, bake them and freeze them, then reheat them the day of the event. I haven't done this with these pretzels, but I reheat frozen soft pretzels all the time and know it works out pretty well.
