White Cakes
  • 1 box 15.25 ounce white cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 egg whites or 3 whole eggs
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup instant white chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening preferably hi-ratio shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk plus up to 3 tablespoons more, if needed
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • black food coloring
  • 1 1/2 ounces electric green modeling chocolate, candy clay, or fondant
  • 1 ounce black modeling chocolate, candy clay, or fondant
  • 1/2 ounce white modeling chocolate, candy clay, or fondant
  • 1 1/2 ounces light blue modeling chocolate, candy clay, or fondant
White Cakes
  1. Allow the cake ingredients to sit at room temperature for about an hour.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Brush two 6-inch cake pans with butter then dust with flour and line with a round of parchment paper.
  4. Brush 4 cupcake cavities in a muffin tin with butter then dust with flour.
  5. Combine the cake mix, water, oil, egg whites, sour cream, and pudding mix together in a large mixing bowl.

  6. Use an electric mixer to beat on low for 30 seconds then increase speed to medium and beat for 1 1/2 minutes.

  7. Fill 4 cupcake cavities about 2/3's full with batter.
  8. Divide the remaining batter among the two 6-inch cake pans.
  9. Bake the cupcakes and cakes for 18-26 minutes removing the cupcakes as soon as they are done at around 18-20 minutes. Check the cakes at around the 22 minute mark.

  10. A toothpick inserted into the cakes should come out with just a few moist crumbs. Or the cakes should spring back when your press a finger on top.

  11. Allow the cakes and cupcakes to cool for 10 minutes in their pans then remove them and set them on a cooling rack. Peel off the parchment paper once the cakes are cooled completely.

  1. Beat the shortening and butter together until well combined using an electric mixer.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla and 3 tablespoons of the milk and beat until fully incorporated and the frosting is smooth.
  4. Add more milk as needed to make the frosting soft enough to pipe through a star tip yet hold it's shape.
  5. Spoon 2/3 cup of the frosting into another bowl.
  6. Stir the cocoa powder into that small bowl of frosting then color using black food coloring and add more milk, if needed.

  1. Roll out the green, black, white, and light blue modeling chocolate to about 1/8th inch thickness on a silicone mat using a silicone rolling pin.

  2. Cut out 2 green and 2 blue tear drops, 4 black ovals, and 4 tiny white circles then attach them together forming two green eyes and 2 blue eyes with pupils and white highlights. 

  3. Attach the green eyes to one cake and the blue eyes to another. 

  4. Cut the cupcakes to form the spikes on each of the dragon cakes. 

  5. Pipe black frosting stars over the entire surface and sides of the cake with the green eyes and pipe white frosting stars over the cake with the green eyes.

Recipe Notes

Allow the frosting to crust over then cover the cakes with a large box or plastic wrap and store at room temperature for up to 2 days.
