Now, this is a Halloween appetizer!
This chicken dip decorated to look like Jack Skellington is so easy to make for a Halloween party or movie night and it can be served hot or cold and made up to a day in advance.
My go-to appetizer for any party is a 5-ingredient chicken dip. It takes about 5 minutes to make, can be served hot or cold, and looks great when decorated.
I know I've shared this recipe several times on this blog. Not only is this my family's favorite dip, but it's light in color so it makes the perfect canvas for my creativity. It worked great to create this Jack Skellington Dip for Halloween.

Over the years I have decorated this dip for Easter, the 4th of July, Christmas, and even a game night.
I've used crushed crackers which were colored with food coloring to make a Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Dip to celebrate the 4th of July.
For our game night, I sprinkled black sesame seeds onto the dip to make a chicken dip dice.
I served the chicken dip in a pie dish surrounded by puffs of bread which made my Chicken Dip Lamb look so cute! The lamb was decorated with colored cream cheese and olives.
I also surrounded my chicken dip with bread and served it in a skillet for Christmas. I decorated the Snowman Chicken Dip using a carrot nose and olive eyes and smile.
Years ago, I made homemade crackers and cut them into witch-shapes, and served them with a chicken dip. I shared that recipe in my very first cookbook, Hungry Halloween.
I called the Halloween dip "Cackling Crackers and Full Moon Dip" and served it at one of my very first Halloween parties. Everyone loved it.
This year, we are not hosting a Halloween party (after 10 parties, we have decided it was time to end our tradition). Instead, we are going to a friend's party. She's hosting a Halloween movie night, so I wanted to create a Halloween appetizer that fits the theme.
I hope everyone at the Halloween party goes nuts over this Jack Skellington Dip. I have a feeling they will, and I hope you and your friends and family like it too!
How to make chicken dip?
Ingredients:
cream cheese - Use 1 block of cream cheese that has been softened for about an hour.
Miracle Whip - The tangy zip of Miracle whip really adds great flavor to this dip. If you use mayonnaise instead, follow this recipe to make homemade Miracle Whip.
- Blend together:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 ½ teaspoon mustard powder
- 3 teaspoons white vinegar
- pinch of salt
lemon juice - Freshly squeeze lemon juice is best, but bottled works fine too.
Worcestershire sauce - A dash of Worcestershire sauce will add a depth of flavor to the dip and give it a salty undertone.
chicken breast - Use shredded chicken breast. I typically use canned chicken breast because it's easy and I always have cans in my pantry, but any plain chicken breast will work.
black food coloring - Any black food coloring will work, but it's best to use coloring that is concentrated like Wilton's Color Right coloring so you don't need to use a lot of coloring.
Printable Halloween Appetizer Recipe
Decorate a creamy chicken dip to look like the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington, from the Nightmare Before Christmas movie. This dip makes a great Halloween appetizer.
- 8 ounces (1 block) of cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup Miracle Whip (or make homemade Miracle Whip using mayonnaise)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 12 ounces shredded chicken
- 3 tablespoons whipped cream cheese
- 1 tablespoon Miracle Whip
- black food coloring

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the softened cream cheese, Miracle Whip, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and chicken in a mixing bowl.

Blend until well combined, using a hand-held mixer or large spoon.

Spread the chicken dip into a 9-inch round pie plate or casserole dish.

Mix the whipped cream cheese, Miracle Whip, and black food coloring together until well blended.

Spoon it into a pastry bag fitted with a #5 round pastry tip.

Pipe Jack Skellington's eyes, nostrils, and mouth onto the chicken dip.

Bake for 20 minutes.

Serve hot.

Or, simply serve it cold.
- To make homemade Miracle Whip, blend together 1 cup mayonnaise, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, 1 ½ teaspoon mustard powder, 3 teaspoons white vinegar, and a pinch of salt.
- You can make this chicken dip up to a day in advance.
- It can be served cold or hot.
- Store in the refrigerator.
- Serve with crackers.
- You won't use all of the black cream cheese, but it's easier to have more in your pastry bag.
