A few years ago, I printed out a recipe from Picky Palate for Chewy Cookies and Cream Bars. I put the page in my “Recipes To Make” folder and there it sat, until last week. As I was digging through my recipes looking for inspiration, wanting some more quick and easy projects, I spotted Jenny’s recipe and new I could dress up the deep dark bars for Halloween.

These sweet treats take mere minutes to make. They are basically cereal treat bars made with Oreo Cookies in place of the rice krispies. They are chewy and full of chocolate flavor and are almost black in color which is perfect for Halloween. Of course, you need orange to go along with the black so I dressed up my bars using some orange jimmies (sprinkles.)These are so easy to make, yet still look really festive. They will make a great addition to our desserts for Halloween.

Halloween Cookies and Cream Bars
(makes 16 bars) recipe adapted from Picky Palate

Ingredients:

18 ounces Oreo Cookies*
10.5 ounce bag mini marshmallows
1/4 cup butter
3.2 ounces orange jimmies (sprinkles)

*Standard packages of Oreo’s are now smaller (14.5 ounces) than when Jenny originated her recipe, so be sure to get a larger family size package of cookies, so you have the 18 ounces you need for this recipe.

Supplies:

optional, food processor (or crush cookies in a large zip top bag)
large mixing bowl
spatula
8 by 8 baking pan lined with non-stick foil or greased with butter

Instructions:

Crush Oreo Cookies. I used a food processor, but you can just put your cookies in a large zip top bag and crush them using a rolling pin, the back of a pan, or even a flat meat mallet.Tip: Butter your bowl and spatula, so the marshmallows wont stick.

Heat butter and marshmallows in the microwave or on the stove top until the marshmallows puff up and melt. Stir in the crushed Oreo Cookies until well blended. Mix in half of the orange sprinkles. The mixture will get very thick and sticky. Press the mixture into your baking pan. Add the remaining sprinkles, press down on top of the bars, to make sure the sprinkles adhere.

Allow the bars to sit for about 30 minutes. Remove from pan and cut into 16 square bars. Serve. Store in an airtight container for about 5 days.

There are so many things I love about this recipe. First, you can make it a few days before Halloween! Second, the dark color with the orange jimmies is perfect! Third, there are only four ingredients!!

Adding this to the list of Halloween goodies I am going to bake! TFS

These look delicious and the orange sprinkles are just the right touch to subtlety say it's Halloween without being too over the top.
